よつばと! Vol 5 Discussion Thread (Yotsuba&! Reading Club)

Guess that means you’re a bad guy, just like Yanda. :stuck_out_tongue:

Which is to say, it’s うまい = delicious

It’s not that she’s not following the instructions that’s bugging me, it’s that she’s folding everything not quiiite square.

Hey, folding’s tough. :sweat_smile:

I want to read it as a super-weird Joyo.

What is yanda saying?

I understand the このがき. But what about the rest?

いって!いてええっ!なにすんだこのがき!

Is it 行って?

And I cannot quite descypher the grammar of the なにすんだ. After some thought, it look like なに(を)するのだ. Or something like that ?

Hey friends, I’m back and updated that Chapter 30 vocab link. I read Ch29 on the plane and am planning to go through 30 today!

Thanks!

on the next page, what does デロデロにする mean? I found not a single understandable hit on google or the dictionary!

Just to make sure, do you have the vocab spreadsheet?
I found it here. It’s supposed to mean soggy, which is understandable in the context of ramen.

Ah! Sure, sorry. I was not aware of it and being on the phone in a bus does not help.

Thanks!

Whew, so many astronomy technical terms in this chapter.

Also, Jumbo is acting surprisingly mature in this chapter, aside from page 111 - he’s not taking the kids out to earn plus points with Asagi, or to get one-up on any of them, he’s just taking them because he genuinely thinks they’ll enjoy it. That said, I reckon Fuuka needs Aika from Aria to tag along and say 恥ずかしいセリフ禁止…

Couple of small jokes that people might miss

Page 103, the star Yotsuba calls “Earth” is almost certainly Mars.

Page 112, Jumbo calls Miura さん (rather than ちゃん) because he’s abrubtly recognising her as an equal

Page 114, the joke about the only thing on Mars to eat being octopus is because in Japan, Martians look like this:

It is really fun to see how many new kanji I can get from context in this chapter ^^.
Still some grammar questions, if somebody has some time to check:

Page 96, second panel, myura’s talking

これ「見てみましょう」としか書いてないじゃん

I kind of get the global meaning of it, Myura is saying that the homework only asks to “try to see” but not to write anything.

これ「見てみましょう」と = This “Try to see” (+ quotation marker)
しか = only but
書いてない = not write
じゃん = isn’t it?

Revisiting Tae kim’s guide section on しか, I would translate this as

It’s only marked this “try to see” but not to write, isn’t it?

And in the next line

別に提出とかしなくていいんだからさ

別に = separately
提出とか = things like a report
しなくていいんだからさ = it’s ok if you don’t do it

Separately, we don’t have to do something like a report

Thoughts?

Xしか+Verb-ない = nothing but X

“It just says “Let’s try and see”, doesn’t it?” (Or “it’s just written here”)

別に = not especially.

“We don’t really have to submit anything”

Ahh I think I got it, thanks ^^. In page 108, panel 2, there is another example of しか. One would say that there chapters are sorted by grammar points, because I can’t remember having seen しか used in previous chapters.

一度に二人分しか沸かせない

一度に = in (at) one time
二人分 = portion for two, part for two
しか = nothing but, “there is only”
沸かせない = boil

I boil nothing but portions for two persons at one time

And less literal…

I can just boil portions for two people at a time

Thanks!

p. 96, thanks @guillepolito and @Belthazar for your questions/comments. I’m kind of confused by Ena’s reaction. Miura says they don’t need to do the report, and then Ena starts emphatically saying they must see the exhibit?

Yeah I think this page is the most confusing of the chapter. I think Miura is trying to say that they don’t have to really try and that they can get by if they do more or less the bare minimum? To which Ena takes exception and says that they need to see them all?

I recently had 正座 in my lessons so the joke actually made sense the first time I read! 102 and 103 are definitely some of the funniest pages so far!

Yeah, I kinda felt like Miura is trying to weasel out of doing any more work, but Ena, who’s already started the work, doesn’t want to hear that it’s meaningless.
