I’m going to try to post more with vol. 3. The threads have been a lot more quiet lately so I’m going to try to help just voice some thoughts and questions along the way.

I’m very happy to say I finished the chapter on Wednesday. Shoujo is not my typical genre, but it has been really great for getting used to casual/colloquial Japanese! I’d say 60% of the time I’m grasping most of the dialogue and the other 40% is still kinda vibes until I look it up.

My method is still to attempt reading the chapter entirely in Japanese without stopping to do all the lookups first. Then go back and look things up or compare to the English translation (I bought the vol 1-2-3 omnibus a few weeks ago).

It was really nice to get some more insight into 逸臣さん. I think often times with stories like this the love interest can feel like this enigma of a perfect person as seen through the main character’s eyes. So to get the conversation between him and 京弥さん and see why he’s suddenly so interested in 雪 was helpful to me to keep my interest in the character going.

What did y’all think of the chapter?

I agree.

I previously read another series by this mangaka duo (「日々蝶々」) which has a female lead who almost never talks, a male lead who doesn’t really know how to talk with girls, I had a better grasp on the both of them a few volumes in than I have on Itsuomi.

I do like his sense of humor, such as giving Yuki ten seconds.

I feel like I’m starting to remember a little bit of the sign language, such as:

…which will be completely useless to me in my day-to-day life.

やった!
Thanks to all y’all who are still reading this series, you’re motivating me to keep up with it and I’m now proud to say I’ve finished my third manga volume in Japanese!

Something I didn’t mention is after finishing volume 1 I rewarded myself with watching through the anime with English subtitles. (A lot of the dialog is essentially 1:1 with the manga, although some of the plot is moved around or cut to better fit the timing of the show.) But that was before I thought I would continue reading the series. So for the last two volumes I’ve had some familiarity with the story ahead of the reading.

Something I tried doing with this last volume is: reading through the chapter doing as minimal of lookups as possible, pausing to make flashcards only if the word felt interesting/important enough to me; then following up by watching that same portion in the anime and/or reading through the English translation of the manga. (I bought the English omnibus (1, 2, 3, 4) for the series). This felt like a really great way to not get caught up by doing a ton of lookups, knowing that I would have clarity eventually, and just allowing any vagueness to just be okay where I didn’t understand in the moment.

Some of the words I added from this volume:

  • 幼馴染
  • 勘違い
  • 褒める
  • あっためる
  • 微睡む
  • 〜ちゃう

Did you know that volume 13 just released last month? (I thought the series was finished!)
I picked it up when I made a quick stop at Kinokuniya when I was on my way to the JLPT earlier this month! The art is usually very pretty but, something just looks odd to me about Yuki’s eyes/face here, I think her eyes are usually pink similar to her hair, but here they’re kinda brown and blury

Oh wow, congrats on your third Japanese volume! Nice job sticking with it!!

I like your method with the anime and English manga as rewards hehehe. The vocab you wrote down from this volume is all good vocab that you encounter a lot!

Ha!! I see what you mean about the cover of vol 13. To me, maybe it’s because her eyes are softly shaded while the rest has line art? The shading under her eyes is strong too hehe

This is a good way to build up reading speed.

I don’t know how much of an impact it has when reading unfamiliar material, but I did something similar with a seven-volume series I’d read in English and watched subtitled previously, and it felt like a clear leveling up in my reading ability from that point.

This was after a year or two of reading with the ABBC and BBC, so anyone earlier on in reading might not see as great a benefit just yet.

Would you be comfortable reading volume 4 at one week per chapter? Or would you prefer to keep it at two weeks per chapter for now?

  • I’d prefer two weeks per chapter
  • I’m fine with one week per chapter

I like to give a little weight on the slower speed. Especially when it’s an ABBC offshoot with longer chapters. I hope everything is okay with keeping the two-weeks per chapter pace for a bit longer! I’ll work on getting volume 4’s thread up in a bit.

I voted that I’m fine with one week per chapter - but I’m more than happy to carry on with two-weeks per chapter for as long as somebody wants to.
I’m always 100% on board with reading at whatever pace lets more people join in!

chapter 12

I interrupt this cute chapter to notice how huge his hands are

His hand looks like it’s big enough to stretch from the bottom of her chin to the top her head

He could just grab her by the head and pick her up
