I know I was mainly joking, but yeah, like ChristopherFritz said, this will get better the more vocab you know.
I may be at a slightly higher level than you when it comes to vocab and grammar knowledge, but I’m far from being able to reliably break down spoken language But I see your point that it’s often easier to separate the words when you hear them.
To be honest, half the time I do a big write-up on grammar, it’s after spending an hour or two looking something up. I have on my computer stand a few books on grammar, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, and particles that I reference. My experience in the book club this year, on top of WaniKani and a few years of vocabulary learning, has also made it easier or me to start parsing my way through Japanese-language definitions and explanations.
Once I think I have a solid understanding, I’ll look for examples of that grammar in use, typically doing a text search on my cache of downloaded Japanese subtitles for anime I own on DVD. Then I rely on my memory of the episode where it’s used (or check the DVD) to see if my understanding is correct for the scene.
Then, as I write up my post, if I have trouble explaining anything, I know I need to review it more to better understand it.
Finally, someone else replies answering the question before I finish. (But I still finish my write-up and post it.)
The more you read, the more you’ll see the most basic vocabulary and grammar patterns over and over again, and it’ll get easier. (Then someone will show up and read like complete nonsense.) Of course, going from one book or manga to another also has the period of adjusting to a new author’s writing style. Sticking to one series beyond volume one helps because you’re already used to the style, at least a little.
yeah but I feel bad like I’m causing trouble when I have so many questions in a row…don’t know why those few pages were so hard to push through… I blame that crazy witch showing up with her weird おみあげ and strange way of talking haha…
I did finally find (though it wasn’t cheap) the next books official English translation and ordered it. Guess it’s been out of print for a long time so not an easy one to find. Maybe our little group can move the market and get a reprint… hehe
I just caught up and finished this volume just in time for more reading! Thanks to everyone who asked questions and answered them! I don’t have anything to add, but the book was a fun read!
You aren’t. You are actually helping others too! There were some things I thought I understood when I read them but when you asked about them and others explained, I realized I didn’t understand them at all. Or sometimes I understand the meaning of the sentence but I don’t pay attention to the grammar, so you asking helps me understand the grammar that’s being used too
aww… thanks! This time around I felt like I was the only with certain questions… I kept searching page numbers and going umm… arg! haha…
But also who ever suggested I get the manga in English…I hate all of you because I just ordered a bunch more stuff that I already have in Japanese that I really wanted to own and read one day but that aren’t book club things … so all the flying witch volumes, girls last tour volumes, and the other stuff … whoever suggested getting the English versions too my pocket book cannot afford this hahaha… me thinks someone works for a publishing company and is getting kickbacks
