Chapter 81 panel:
It’s ok, says the cat, you can trust the flying Care Bears…
I mean, to be fair, it’s a cat that she already trusts, sooo…

Despite Mera’s assurances to Akane that this is not a tournament arc, this is, in fact, a tournament arc. Complete with Talking Is A Free Action. Though I gotta say, it’s kinda mean that victory goes to the first person to win - means that anyone who comes after them by pure luck of the draw misses out on a chance through no fault of their own. Though given how the first bout turned out, perhaps they’re expecting to require multiple rounds before someone figures out the trick.

If the 90’s taught me anything, this tournament should wrap up in 12 more episodes.

Given that Team Aomori are the main characters, Akane winning was pretty much the inevitable outcome, but… I’m with the crowd, here - that victory was unsatisfying. I was already a bit unimpressed that she was about to win in the first battle by just hiding the edge of the ring, but straight-up changing the rules was kinda worse. I actually thought she was just gonna switch their positions.
Boo! Rematch! Host it in Australia!
All the Akane shadow clones were fun, though.
Side note, can anyone figure out what kanji’s on the back of the jackets?
The 90s may have taught you something, but perhaps they didn’t teach Ishizuka-sensei. ![]()
I’m with you on the victory being unsatisfying. I thought maybe she’d done so magic that they switched position, and that we were going to realise it was Akatsuki sticking out of the ground, not Akane. I guess they had to finish it somehow, they were on fight 51, but I thought the power of five witches combined was going to achieve a bit more than that!
My favourite panel this week
Are you looking down on Akatsuki? ![]()
That said, actual winning method aside, if we assume that any of the witches could have won their first bout when similarly powered-up, then they effectively decided the host city via paper-scissors-rock. (Though considering Akane only won through trickery, that’s not necessarily a valid assumption.)
Quite. Also, it’s Akane, so of course there’s one of her lying on the ground fast asleep. ![]()
Many of the following panels are a lot of fun too.

I gave up and searched “protect” in a dictionary. One of the results was 護. Well, it could be it but really highly stylized? ![]()
Wow! Really looking forward to the read aloud session for this chapter!
Page 135, when they’re talking about なつかし videos of foreign people on a stage making music with household objects, my immediate first thought was for British group Stomp. For example:
Not mops, but close enough. Dunno if this is specifically what Ishizuka-sensei had in mind, but they’ve definitely been permanently associated with the genre in my mind.
Hmm. It is possible…

This week brings another volume to a close!
Oh, there’s some real-world locations this chapter.
They start at DemiDemi (and, haha, it was really hard to be sure, because almost all of the interior photos on Google Maps are of the food rather than the decor, but after a lot of scrolling, I did eventually manage to find this). Oh, and Hirosaki High School happens to be right nearby - that could well be where they attend school.
Then they head to Kudoji, where they remain for the rest of the chapter. Front entrance with the stairs is here. Kinda tempted to add this to my list of places to visit. You can get here from Hirosaki Station on the 192 bus. I can’t promise that you won’t be caught up in any sorts of phenomena, though.
Page 173, Maruyama Okyo is a real person. So is the painting.
And another year’s worth of Flying Witch…
