Half the fun of this manga is the Bocchi reaction faces

Feels like a fairly chill reading so far, except I was having a lot of trouble with page 13-14. (To be fair, Nako-chan also seems kind of confused lol.) I’m putting my translation + interpretation here to get opinions!

Page 13

B: Um… Nako-chan

N: Mmhmm

B: Um…

N: ?

B: Nako-chan, you’re (<- implied) always fiddling with your phone, but… (speaking in monotone)

N: Something started… (I assume the context here is like “something weird is happening” or “Bocchi’s trying to do something, but I don’t know what…)

B: You’re doing something… what is it?! (literally just “What are you doing?,” but I’m trying to translate the whole “it looked like a regular sentence and then she enthusiastically added “ka” at the end” thing)

N: “It’s a game.”

B: “A g-game…”

B: “G-game… game…”

N: “…”

B: “On the topic of games… since there’s no choice, is it okay if I shoot?”

- this is the line I really wasn’t sure about. To be fair Nako-chan also seems confused. (her next line is, I think “What do you want to do?!” or maybe more naturally, “What are you trying to do?!”

Based on the next page, Bocchi seems to want to say “Is it okay if I send you a message?” I think she assumed Nako-chan had been messaging people, and was going to follow up with “Ah, then can I message you too?”

When Nako-chan instead said she was playing a game, Bocchi panicked. Trying to find a way to tie “gaming” back to her original plan, she came up with saying “is it okay if I shoot” (using the verb とばす, which is used both to shoot projectiles as if in a video game, and to shoot someone an email).

I’m not sure why she says “since there’s no choice”. I think she means more like “oh it can’t be helped, since we’re already on the topic of games, I have to talk about this related thing!”

Does that seem about right?

Page 14

B: I don’t really touch my cell phone…

That’s because… I don’t really have frie… (in the vocab list “友達がい“ is listed as “true friendship,” but is this not just “友達がいない but cut off early?)

Because… I don’t have them… Wahhh…

N: (Ah… she wants to exchange emails, huh?)

N: I’m your friend.

B: …!

N: So… from there? (I assume this means, “so, now that you’re done crying, want to try again?”)

B: Since there’s no choice… is it okay if I shoot…”

N: Shoot!!! (Maybe more naturally, “Shoot it already!!”)

B: “I will hear your email address” (maybe more naturally, “Please let me know your email address”? Why is this in quotation marks?

Is that what she thinks Nako-chan would say in response to “Is it okay if I shoot you an email”? Or is Bocchi herself trying to ask for Nako-chan’s email, and it’s in quotation marks because she’s quoting a stock phrase?)

N: Nah

B: (Bocchi is so shocked and sad her hair stands up?)

N: “If I reply, I’ll die…” (Is the context here like, “It would gross me out so much to exchange messages with you that it would kill me”? Is this in quotation marks because she thinks Nako-chan is thinking that?)

B: It’s a joke, dumbass!

Also, I like the bit on page 15 where they split 交換 into its individual kanji. Like the kanji that mean exchange are being exchanged themselves. Cute!

Got some help for this one.

Bocchi is reading a sentence she wrote on her hand in advance. When she gets, the “game answer”, she franticly search for a prepared answer on her whole forearm.

Not finding anything, she says "game is not on my list of choice. May I skip this sentence ?’

Ahh. I definitely didn’t expect that, but it makes sense!

So rather than “speaking in monotone,” she really is reading in monotone.

And she repeats the same thing later, because she also didn’t expect Nako to say “I’m your friend.”

Then, the quotation marks in the later quotes are because she’s still reading off her arm

That really does help with the whole section!

Yah, it’s easier to tell in the anime, because it actually shows you what’s on her hand.

Summary

And a couple of line of dialogue later…

She tried to download the dialogue decision tree ahead of time, except Nako wasn’t following the same walkthrough.

This is great and super helpful!! Thanks for sharing
(extremely minor note: interesting she puts a dot after A but not after Q. no colons here)

I’m now struggling with the next part.

Page 16

なこちゃんメールだと キャラ違うね!

Does キャラ means personality, character here ? Like, she seems more joyful with all this kaomoji ? Altho Bocchi seems to not know about kaomoji

Page 16

Yep. Basically she’s feels like a different person when she’s texting.

Which is weird, because she’s got one in her username.

Edit: Upon further thought, I’m now wondering if those are the names each is recorded as in the other’s phone. Like, they’re saved contact profiles rather than LINE usernames, or whatever. That would make more sense…

page 16

Yeah, that’s how I understood it too. It looks like they each created a contact, old style.

Can メール or めドア refer to phone number ? Chat service profiles ?

Japanese mobile phones all have an e-mail address that’s specifically associated with the phone, so essentially yes, the メールアドレス is the phone number.

That’s how it works?? All this time I could never figure it out.

A fun chapter this week!! The characters in this are so cute, I’m enjoying it a lot so far. Page 15 q in the spoilers.

A little confused on this panel, specifically nako’s response of 最悪のフリだな. I’m assuming she’s saying something along the lines of 'that is the worst thing you could’ve said but I can’t find a definition of フリ that feels like it fits.

Maybe this? Just a guess though.

seconding this. thanks @Belthazar for explaining this because i was just like “why are they emailing each other on their phones instead of texting”

A quick batch of translations !

page 12

What did you do ?

I wanted to greet you energetically…

Ah… ‘morning, Bocchi

Good morning Nekochan !

You did this on purpose or what ?

No, it’s not that…

Get away a bit more… more… okay, from there

Good morning, Nakochan !

Was there a point to this ?

It’s fun !

Right…

page 13

Hum… nakochan…

Em… Ah, right…

You’re always findling with you mobile phone and… (speaking super stiff).

Something started…

What are you… doing ?

A game.

Game ? Game… game…

There is no such choice [in the list], so may we skip this ?

What do you want ?

page 14

I don’t use my phone a lot…. Reason is, I don’t have friends…

(Ah, she probably want to exchange email addresses). I’m your friend.

…… !!!

So ?

There is no such choice [in the list], so may we…

Don’t skip this !

“A… ask for the email address.” (that read like a todo list, right ?)

No way.

“Die when going home” (todo list again ?)

I was joking !

page 15

Nakochan : Let’s chat about something !

(Right, we have to chat to become better friends. And I want to become better friends)

Bocchi : please tell me something funny / interesting.

This is like the worst answer.

page 16

Bocchi: What food do you like (still speaking textbook polite japanese here :D)

Nakochan: I like sweet things. I dislike spicy things.

Bocchi: Nakochan character in emails is different!

hey ! shut up !

(Ashamed)

I want input images like Nakochan does.

(images?)

You mean Kaomoji ?

If you convert it to kaomoji, there it is ! (I don’t exactly get this part)

Ah, right ! Hold on… I did it !

The whole body ???

page 17

It’s over ! Bocchi, let’s go home.

Yes !

(Thinking about it, we only talked face to face this morning… I wonder if this is okay…

Hey ! Stop walking carelessly while using your phone. It’s dangerous.

page 18

Nakochan… [sending] emails is fun !

Do you feel better ?

Yes !

I’ll send you another mail when I get home.

(with no more mail exchange, Bocchi suddenly feels anxious again and goes back to her list)

Then… then… “What do you dream of ?”

The list of choices again !

I [have a ?] dream but it’s a secret !

It’s a secret… it’s a secret…

“Ah, I thought so !”

Now that is a proper answer !

page 19

“What food do you like ?”

It’s the second time [you ask this] !

page 20

“Ah, that’s the second time I ask this” (she prepared that answer too apparently XD )

This is annoying.

If you type “かおもじ” and push the “conversion” button, your IME will start suggesting kaomoji. Like so:
