Hi! Mostly hopping in to say I’m following along. This week’s chapter took me about 1.5 hours. Don’t ask me why, but I’m not using the vocab sheet and instead I’m looking up each unknown kanji painfully by hand. I guess I had to learn how to do it someday.
Two short questions:
Page 16, panel 1
I think it reads きり一つれー
Is this something they say at the end of class? What does that mean?
Page 16, panel 5
What does はじかいた mean?
Thanks!
Yes, this is something that happens at the end of class (and I believe also at the very beginning). The class’ president (usually) gives these two orders to the other students:
起立 (きりつ) => Stand up.
礼 (れい) => Bow (as in, bending your body forward).
As far as I understand it’s meant as a salutation to the teacher.
In this case, the way it’s written describes the way people usually gives these orders: きりーつ , with an long り and れー with an long “え” (that’s because い is a weak vowel and sometimes cannot be heard clearly)
This is an informal abbreviation of 恥をかく (with the を omitted). It literally means “to be embarrassed”. This is a reference to the previous panel where she accidentally shouts “うるさいな!” and startles even the teacher.
Thank you very much, that helps a lot!
