ひとりぼっちの○○生活 (BBC) Week 1

Page 4

Come again?

As long as you’re not friends with the whole class. This cutting-off-of-relationship is intended as impetus for Bocchi to make more friends.

Page 5

If we’re rendering it in English, her name is Sunao Nako. Family name Sunao, given name Nako.

Maybe? I’m not sure…

She continues with ろくななはち… (= 六、七、八) , and then あ、5こえてた (i.e. 超えてた)

Page 6

It’s いつ + ぶり, which doesn’t seem to have a dictionary entry on its own, but means “for the first time in x amount of time” (e.g. 年ぶり = for the first time in years) + a pondering だろう = “I wonder how long its been (since this happened)”

p4

ムリ so literally “impossible”. “Of course, such a thing as a self introduction is impossible (for me), huh”

First line is いい ぼっちっ, if you were to insert a space
that いい there is a sort of “Look” or “Alright”
“Alright, Bocchi…”

Also the whole thing is more aimed at Bocchi imo, so it’s more like “Becase we will be separated, you have to work hard and make new (lit.: different) friends”

Similarly as above, this is aimed at Bocchi, and also the first part of the sentence is the condition
“If you don’t end up being friends with your entire class by the time we graduate from high school, we are over”

Also “impossible”

Yeah, it’s “Promise me”, specifically “Make a lot of friends and reconcile with me”

p5

たら can be used for to indicate order. “After I rest for 5 seconds…”

ろくななはち, aka 6, 7, 8…
and then
あ5こえてた…ふふ…
Ah, I passed 5

p6

It’s ぶり (2nd meaning here: Jotoba word: 振り) + いつ, how many. So it’s after however long

Geh, of course it’s hidden down in meaning number two…

… of a word that’s otherwise seemingly unrelated, indeed :joy:

Ahah, I somehow thought that いいぼっち was short for ひとりぼっち.

As I understand it, it’s the same ぶり that’s used in the construction of 久しぶり (ひさしぶり). In another dictionary, it’s listed as a suffix, which tracks!

This use of ぶり also came up in the Mitsuboshi Colors book club, when the girls visit the zoo:

Also later in the series when Sacchan (dressed as Santa) is going to give her mother a gift:

I imagine most people encounter ぶり in 久しぶり, which should make it easy to learn and recognize elsewhere.

So, page 6, I’ve been interpreting ひいおばあちゃん as “my grandmother [who is named] Hii”. Today I learnt that ひいおばあさん means “great-grandmother”.

I meant more in the sense that 振り in the “way; manner; style” meaning, which is also very common, doesn’t seem like it has much to do with the “for the first time after x” meaning

Oh oh! That totally makes sense, and I totally misunderstood what you meant, whoops! :sweat_drops:

Yeah, you’re right. That it means both actually seems quite strange. I haven’t encountered the “way; manner; style” meaning of it yet (as least that I remember). Perhaps when I see it in action the commonality will become more clear to me… そうすれば、あたしは多分分かる…

Let’s keep going !

page 7

I give it to YOU !
You wanna become a lackey (let’s go with that word) or something ? Because I don’t get this… I’m sorry but go find someone else.
Lackey… Lackey… does it count as friend ?
What !?
I… I want to become friend with you, but I don’t know how to do it… I’m sorry.

It’s over.

page 8

So… I take this x and…
You want to become a lackey or something ?
What… what to do… ?

Good bye !
Rain ? I forgot my umbrella at home…
Here, please take mine !
It’s not that I’m your lackey !
You had a cough, you should not / I can’t / I don’t want you to worsen it !
Hey ! You ! (what’s with that japanese ?) (I’m assuming the way Bocchi talks sounds a bit too “written japanese” ?)

page 9

I ran away… I ran away … I totally ran away*(this here, the sadness, the misery, the loneliness, how she’s disappointed in herself… This hits hards. )*
I didn’t keep my promise, Kaichan…
Sunaochan was a nice person to speak with someone like me… Sunaochan…
HEY ! YOU, THE VOMIT-GIRL ! WAIT !

I get it. You’re a weird, awkward and naive girl.
When there is only one Umbrella, I guess two person can fit under it…
Then, here’s a return gift. (it tastes good)
Sunaosan…
About that ! Call me Nako.

page 10

Whatever… I was happy when you told me you wanted to become friend. So, don’t worry.
(Right, Bocchi… The trick to make friends… It’s to come to love the other person. It’s not only for the promise !) (Yawarakai is telling her that she needs to actually take interest in other people ? Not just do it for the promise you made, otherwise it won’t work ?)
Nakochan… It looks like I’m falling in love with you !
Eeeh ???

So, will you be my friend ?
Ah, that’s what you meant ?
Say it like that, idiot ! (or “it’s dumb to say it like that” ?)

Well, I’ll go, BO-CHI.
A new friend. A new life.
I’m happy I… what ?
Bocchi’s new life had begun !

(Did she passed out when she called her Bocchi ?)

Just so I understand, are you looking for corrections and/or translation improvements? Or are you just posting for yourself?

p8

リンゴ there is apple, I believe this is something like "if you represent those apples as “x” or something.

Literally “Having it get worse is no good”, which can be translated in a variety of ways, like “It would be bad if it got worse”.

She talks very formally

p9

It’s closer to “I guess if there is only one umbrella, it’s best if we both use it at the same time”

p10

She’s talking to bocchi, “You seem happy… I think” is what I would go with, but it’s hard to translate

Specifically her middle school life

I assume they are learning algebra

No, I’m pretty sure it’s abstract philosophy, and they are questioning what an apple even is

Ahah sorry, I was not super clear, writting translations serves several purposes:

  • Forces me to actually try to understand what is said. Not just the general meaning.
  • I usually add some specific questions I have along the way.
  • It can help other people
  • If I get something completely off, people may correct me if they have time to read the whole thing.

Thank you all for you answers !

I’m going to post my translations here. I know it’s last minute, but I’ve had minimal time for this the past few days. Plus, I had a little trouble in parts of this.

“I made a promise”
Bocchi is the narrator here

p9

Here あと functions as a sort of “also”
ジュースのお返し is return gift for the juice. If you check earlier pages she did accept that honey juice thing, so she’s giving her a lollipop in return.

volume one, page eight.

I am so confused by this dialogue, please can someone help ?

I feel like she is saying that she cant go outside due to her cough, and that the other person should keep away / go without her, but i have no idea how what she said could ever mean that… thanks !

I also wanted to share my conclusion for chapter one.
So bocchi has a conversation with her friend, who tells her that she needs to befriend the whole class. [I kind of missed why she took this as her sole responsibility, maybe because she values her friend a lot ?]. So bocchi makes efforts to befriend someone in her class, and after efforts and waves of emotion [to the point of being sick], and making kind gestures like giving away a juice box, they end up walking home together, sharing an umbrella to shelter from the rain.
