And here we go! Time to get stuck in. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed here - you just need to take it one strip at a time. And remember, read panels vertically.

References and real-world locations!

  • Bocchi’s guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Custom 1968 Reissue Ebony. (Or, uh… Hitori’s guitar. Noone’s called her “Bocchi” yet.)
  • On page 4, Papa Goto makes an aside comment about the family dog’s name - for some reason, the name itself is not mentioned here that I can see, so I’m not sure how the original readers would have understood this joke, but it’s Jimihen, after Jimi Hendrix.
  • The posters on the walls of Bocchi’s closet on page 7 and the badges on Bocchi’s bag on page 9 are references to real bands in the anime, but here in the manga they’re unreadable, sooo… pass.
  • Bocchi’s online name guitarhero is presumably a reference to the Guitar Hero game series.
  • Lastly, the live house Starry, which just manages to squeeze in on the final page of this reading, is based on Shelter in Shimo-Kitazawa. Which is also real.

I started typing not to be that guy but remembered I have this saved soooooo

Akshually I believe it’s a 1957 reissue since it’s an ebony fretboard

Listen, by the time you’d hit the A in “Akshually”, you’d already expressed more about guitars than I’ll ever know. :stuck_out_tongue:

subtle differences (the tuners are different materials too) but we can’t all be shut in guitar nerds can we?

I have it on good authority that Hitori-san is known as Bocchi by page 10.

I’m starting to wonder if we’re gonna need a moratorium on Bocchi/Bocchi jokes in these threads. :stuck_out_tongue:

jokes aside, as someone who’s never seen or read Bocchi, I appreciate the post with the explanations, thanks!

The intro reads like a normal manga, the yonkoma starts on page 7. I don’t know if that’s what you were asking here.

Ah that explains why I’m not confused yet, thanks.

The non-4-koma opening pages are generally 書き下ろし for the volume and not part of the original monthly publication.

Ah I assumed that was the case but wasn’t sure. It certainly reads that way, there’s some redundancy with the start of the 4koma proper.

First impressions

Really like it so far! Light and funny.
I like how seriously she took learning the guitar, and the big gap there is between her perception of things and how she is probably perceived, for example here

:joy: :joy: :joy:

Wondering what’s that on page 9?

And thanks for the Vocab spreadsheet, with it the reading was no problem!

They just look like rubber bracelets to me. But more generally, she has a bunch of band goods.

Thanks, couldn’t figure out what グッズ was (could have used a dictionary I guess but thought I would be able to understand katakana by myself, so naive)

what sean blue said, it was a trend for awhile to have these garish rubber bands around your arm.

Boccher bought a load of band merch to try and get people to talk to her

also, I haven’t read it so just guessing from the anime :stuck_out_tongue:

I think it’s correct but I also think you guys should use spoiler tags:)

They’re silicone, I think.

Like this

But with band names or logos printed or engraved on them.

Is it really a spoiler? It’s page three of the story, and they’re not even particularly relevant to the plot. They’re just a thing that exists in the real world. :stuck_out_tongue:
