なぜ?どうして?科学のお話 / Absolute Beginner Bookclub

I’m interested. I would be nervous to read though

You are not alone …

I sort of forced myself to overcome this fear, when I joined Mysterious Town readings (Beginner’s club) back in January being around level 5, and struggling with hiragana/katakana readings for real. I could only last one small page. Sometimes I had a block and misread は/ほ/ま randomly. Once I was told that I’ve read a vertical row twice  And I’m sure that I sounded awful. The rest of the group was very supportive and patient nevertheless.

My point is that it’s super hard to read Japanese out loud when you’re beginner, and the only way to get better is to practice. You don’t have to read if you’re not comfortable. You don’t even have to speak at all.

If the time will work for my time zone, I would definitely join to have this practice. This book is good level for me to read aloud now, challenging but not killing (I hope).

In the lingodeer app, you have at the end of each block of 2-4 lessons a video story that you can watch, then read and finally speak sentence by sentence, recording yourself and finally listen to your own recording. You can also upload your recording, but I don’t think that anyone wants to hear that. I like this stories because it is also a good listening exercise.

Wow we are spread over a lot of time zones! Let’s try a poll for the times that are not between 01:00 and 05:00 for anyone:

Which dates could you make this weekend? The times are given for UTC on a certain day - be aware that may be a different day of the week for you (e.g. Saturday UTC 22:00 is Sunday 08:00 if you live in UTC +10).

  • Saturday UTC 13:00
  • Saturday UTC 14:00
  • Saturday UTC 20:00
  • Saturday UTC 21:00
  • Saturday UTC 22:00
  • Sunday UTC 13:00
  • Sunday UTC 14:00

I’ll plan to leave the poll open for about 48 hours.

I’ll give that a stab, but I’m making no promises. It’s 11pm for me.

Same here, but I’m jet lagged and hate mornings so probably the best time for me. Also high likelihood I’ll have had wine, which is the only way you’re going to find me doing any reading.

They’re pretty early for me but I’m typically up then anyways.

I work weekends so my available windows are pretty narrow unfortunately.

Okay I’ve closed the poll. The most popular time was Sunday 13:00 UTC. If this works the way I think it does this should show the correct time at your local time: 2020-05-31T13:00:00Z

I was thinking maybe to read the first half of this section? That is from Yoghurt through to and including Static Electricity (17 pages). We can then read the second half the following week (we will be just about to reach the last page in the daily translations). Does that sound ok?

Perhaps someone who has regular status could change the title of this thread from “Now reading part 4” to “Live reading this Sunday”. Always looking to attract more interest to the club

Changed it!

I will try to log in - it’s 6 AM my time but maybe I’ll be able to wake up for it!

If anyone wants to volunteer beforehand to read a section they could post it here. Would give a chance to practice in advance if you want.

9 am works great for me in the future. Will not be able to participate this time unfortunately as I will be going out of town Sunday but hopefully next time!

If by section you mean one story, I volunteer for the chewing gum.

I could try the boat section.

I should emphasise that I have almost zero speaking experience in Japanese (basically a couple of Pimsleur CDs).

It’s getting that time again where I ask someone with a physical copy of the book to make a list of how each page ends for the next section please. This will be the final section for this book. Thanks in advance!
