とんがり帽子のアトリエ Volume 6 🧙‍♀️

I just added 尖 to my kanji deck because I encounter it from time to time (it’s on page 55 this week) and it led me to making a connection I had missed: 尖 can be used to spell 尖る(とがる) which is a variant of とんがる – as in とんがり帽子, “pointed hat”. A big feature of the 大講堂 are those 尖塔 buildings which are spelled with the same kanji.

So I guess it means that the wizards decided to have pointed buildings to match their pointy hats, which is tacky as heck IMO.

Also the origin of this kanji is pretty fun: it’s 小 on top of 大. Something is sharp if it goes from “big” to “small”. And people say kanji are hard…

the dank side of the force

I mean seriously:

If I were her I’d pick the つばあり side just for the swagg factor. The とんがり and their dweeby outfits are not even trying.

Chapter 33

Did anyone else notice that there seems to be a theme of being “misfits” among the disciples?

  • Koko is a commoner.
  • Riche refused to learn any magic other than her own.
  • Agathe was rejected by her own family, having been accused of plagiarism.

I wonder if we will get to know that Tetia has a troubled background as well.

I thought the bedsheet and mattress had disappeared and was very confused for a minute. I guess it would be a way to cut down on laundry…

When I returned from last month’s vacation, I was 4 weeks behind, so I thought I’d catch up, grabbed the wrong volume and read the first half of volume 7. Thankfully, all I got spoilered for was K-dogs tragic backstory, so the damage wasn’t that bad. Now I’m finally caught up properly.

Volume 32

Yes, and given what we’ve learned about K-dog’s atelier so far, I’d honestly be surprised if Tetia didn’t have some sort of special reason why she couldn’t take on apprenticeship anywhere else, too. In chapter 32, we learned that most wizards prefer to stay in the underwater capital or local strongholds like Kaln, and that it’s unusual to live out in the middle of nowhere the way our atelier folks do. If you add the clues that K-dog is mistrusted by the police and has a reputation for rule-breaking, I doubt his atelier would be the first choice for parents who care about their children’s education. It looks like a dumping ground for kids no other atelier wants, who have already failed in other apprenticeships or who have reasons to want to get away from their families or wizarding society as a whole.

Yay, new nickname for Sassugato…but can anyone explain the pun to me?

I also didn’t really get how the water statue is created. Tetia’s explanation makes it sound like it’s caused by literal shower thoughts…but how?

Oh no… That’s even worse!

ch32

This one is a bit weak, it’s just Agathe and デレ (like in tsundere). I don’t think there’s anything else to it.

I found this sequence hard to understand but I interpreted it as a wizard getting an idea while bathing and not waiting until they got out to give it a try, eventually leaving it to linger there after they’re gone.

ch33

What a cliffhanger! I should have read this later this week…

Hear her out, I say.

ch. 33

I agree with the magic boo solution. It’s what legchair guy deserves.

Welcome back @Boodil, nice seeing you

Chapter 33

Enjoyed this chapter! Agreed that it looks like Qifrey is running a refugee’s atelier.
Was expecting to get a bit more from Agathe’s background but that was interesting enough.
And the cliffhanger, aaaaaaaah! I want to know! (I have no idea myself as to what it could be)

I’m going to recycle my guess from the previous volume and say .

The club’s nearly caught up to me!

A month ago while I was unwell this was one of the only things I was motivated to read, so I read ahead by a whole volume. I’d probably have kept going, except I’m reading quite a few books and novels in clubs and am quite behind on some of them.

I like it when someone catches up with the club but for some reason I like it even more when the club catches up with someone :joy:

Well, I sort of waited for the club!

Chapter 34

Ok, that was a great surprise. I even got a bit jealous at legchair dude.
That said, I didn’t get how on Earth Koko got this idea while listening to Agathe‘s story of getting accused of plagiarism by her family. Anyone?

We’re on chapter 34!

Fixed it. The spoiler was actually about chapter 34. However, I couldn’t help myself and also read the next chapter, so now I ruined my chance to speculate about the cliffhanger :expressionless:.

I feel like I’m not great at getting everyone’s genders in this manga. “Legchair dude” I thought was female. On the other hand, I also thought “crummy wizard” was female, but I think I was wrong on that. And maybe it doesn’t matter :woman_shrugging:

Same. I think the author likes to draw men with delicate features.

ch34

Yeah same. I went back to the “eureka” moment in the previous chapter and I don’t really get what triggered that. In fact based on the ensuing conversation it’s not clear that koco herself really had any concrete idea besides “friendship is magic”.

I wonder if there’s an explanation in the original publication schedule, maybe they absolutely needed a cliffhanger at this point? We even got a “previously on tongari boshi” section repeating the last interaction on the first page of this chapter.

Also why is coko blindly trusting the message of the 小袋? Are we supposed to believe that it’s from Agathe? I doubt it but at least it would explain why coko follows the instructions without hesitation.
