Zen Calendar 2023

Hah, me too. Been wondering if there’s a verb shortage in Japan, so they need to conserve them for when it really counts.

What do you mean I've been reading too many murder mysteries lately?

Or maybe the meaning could also be

Don’t give up!

Hmm, I prefer the patience meaning on this one.

We already had 最後まで努力を, after all.

I mean, it can still work

Once again, we have supplemental reading available:

I like the patience meaning as well.

Partly because I’ve definitely heard “patience in all things” as a little mantra before in english, but also because it feels a little more… broad? to me:

Presumably, not everything in your life is going to be hard. So while you do want to have patience and perseverance when things aren’t working, it’s also important to have patience when things are going well. It’s easy to get too over-eager and bite off more than you can chew when everything is coming up roses, and have that come back to bite you later.

I’m not sure how much of that is present in the japanese reading, but that’s where it brings my thoughts, at least.

Also, some things are not worth persevering through.

But it’s trying to get general advice out of a 4-word phrase. :speak_no_evil:

If we go that route, we could also spin patience to be negative. Like being too patient while being treated poorly

Perhaps the creator of the phrase didn’t think this one through enough

“an appropriate amount of patience relative to the severity of your situation in all things” doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as well
