"You should already know this reading" WTF lesson?!

What?

Just had a lesson that said “you should already know a reading/meaning from a previous lesson”, but you don’t?

HOW DARE KOICHI DO THIS?!

You could rant about it all night long with some smooth jazz in the background and a whiskey in your hand

… or just install this script I made for you.

Picture time:

HOW DOES IT WORK (aka HOW TO INJECT MNEMOS INTO BUTTS… UHM, LESSONS)
 - hover over some Japanese in a lesson or on a vocabulary page
 - wait until a tooltip appears
 - Click on one of the underlined links and wait a bit
 - The mnemonic of a related item should appear

How to install this script
- Make sure you have the Greasemonkey (Firefox) or Tampermonkey (other browsers) add-on installed, so you can enjoy userscripts.
- Go to https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/25128-wanikani-you-should-already-know-this-reading
- Click the green button
- BOOM, DONE!

How to install/edit user scripts guide:
 /t/Visual-Guide-on-How-To-Install-A-Userscript/12136/1

Known bugs:
 - The mnemonics that get injected do not have tooltips added to them. That’s sucky if you get 絶やす, but otherwise I don’t think it happens all that often. I won’t fix it unless it proves to be a major inconvenience.

Change log:

v1.3
 - added on the review page

v1.2
 - initial release

Note: this has been developed and tested in Chrome. Let me know if other browsers have difficulties.

Ooh, nifty. I’ll definitely be using this from time to time to remember things I’ve forgotten haha Thanks Mempo

I usually have this problem when I do things out of order, but I tend to just power through it… this is really nifty though, I’ll have to keep it in mind!

Thanks for another awesome script ^^

Sometimes you just have bad luck with vocab that's on the same level (usually with trans and intrans verb pairs). It's just plain annoying when one of them explains the reading and the other is like 'meh, look at the first one'.

I'll make it work on reviews too. Having to navigate to another tab just to look up the mnemonic from a failed review is another one of those things that really grinds my gears.

speaking of this thing, for the reading sun, was there EVER a mnemonic for the reading じつ? I got a word that used it’s reading, and it said “make sure you not it uses it’s alternate reading, じつ.” but I couldn’t find the mnemonic for it. I’m long past needing one, I know it really well now, but did I miss it? or was there never one? did こういちさん betray me? HOW COULD YOU!!! (jk obviously)

Wow! This is brilliant!

Assuming you're talking about the alternate reading for the kanji 日 yes there actually was a mnemonic for it. In the hints below the regular mnemonic was a second mnemonic for that alternate reading. https://www.wanikani.com/kanji/%E6%97%A5

When i try to do reviews with this enabled i get this:

using chrome~

I totally missed this one. Also, had no idea I needed it until now. I haven’t even used it yet and I already can’t imagine life without it.

Cheers Mempo!

Yea, I knew about that, but somehow forgot to mention it in the OP.

I'm afraid you'll have to choose my friend...

There's a conflict with another script and the only solution that works atm is to disable one of them.

I'm fairly certain it's WK Review Info Page Link (not that useful anyway). Can't check though because I'm on vacation mode. Either that or WK Similar Kanji. Do you have any of those enabled?

 both :D
good to know which are causing it though, thank you~

edit: tested and its only WK Review Info Page Link that causes the issue, it works with WK Similar Kanji.

I’d love to use this script but it does not work for me…

It just injects the text “Mnemonic for 切” in a h5 header. Reading also does not work.

I’m using these scripts:

Am I missing something? Thanks! :sunny:

No you didn’t miss it. Koichi, kind as he may be, only graces us with mnemonics for the most common readings, and sometimes he doesn’t even give us those. A reading the other day had an explanation along the lines of:

“I’m gonna let you create the mnemonic for this one. It’s good practice and you should get into the habit of doing it.”

Thanks koichi :expressionless:
