Yomitan (or similar dictionaries) on Safari

Hello,

I recently switched from google chrome to safari for wanikani reviews, and couldn’t find any comparable dictionaries where I could highlight text and learn the pronunciation for it.

I would love some help if anyone knows how I can install there here.

Thank you!

If you’re using Safari, that means you must be using an Apple device, and they have a pretty great dictionary built in.

But usually I use the iOS app Yomiwa to look things up manually because it has a lot of great info included. But it can also be added to the [ ↑ ] Share option in order to be able to select a word/phrase and send it right to the app. There’s also a separate browser app by the same developer that could be useful if you’re doing intentional browsing for the purposes of Japanese study.

But I’m not sure if any of that applies to your specific use case. Can you elaborate on the context in which you’re trying to access a dictionary?

Thank you for this! I have definitely not used the built in dictionary to its fullest extent, so your prompt to check it out has been really helpful. The context in which I really want to use the dictionary, though is during reviews when I’m reading the contact sentences and need a little bit of a boost to remember the exact reading of a kanji.

The thing I liked about using Google Chrome with Yomitan was that all I had to do was hold shift and then hover over the words that I wanted to see the definition and even a context sentence or two for.

I checked out the three link you provided, and I am happy to have them in my back pocket, but after looking into them, I don’t think it’s exactly what I was searching for.

Thanks a bunch for your reply

Aha! No problem. Yeah, that makes sense.

While I prefer Safari in many cases (especially for battery life), Chrome has a much more extensive extension ecosystem because it’s got the most market share and has almost from its inception supported extensions with flexible and fairly easy-to-use frameworks (while Safari has gone through multiple iterations, being more strict in many cases).

Anyway, I was doing some searching after reading your reply and while probably not what you’re looking for this looked interesting:

And while I haven’t used it yet (out at the moment), it looks like this free app/extension may do what you’re looking for in Safari:

Cheers!

Hey,

if you’re looking for an extension 10ten Reader is available for Safari. It basically works the same except for adding your own dictionary files.
You can just download it from the Mac AppStore.
I hope it helps!

My app Manabi Reader (iOS/macOS) doesn’t yet have a Safari extension, but it behaves like a browser itself. I will add the extension too before long. I’m also working on adding Yomitan dictionary support now.
