Yomichan is no longer maintained?

I just checked, you can customize it:

I am not familiar with dictionaries, but I see in the settings the following:

I think the tool is actively maintained and the developer has replied to me before, so if there is a good format of a dict, they might include JP->JP, which sounds like a good idea. 10ten comes from rikaichamp if I am not mistaken, which was the chrome version of rikaikun. Or something like that. Tofugu has a blog post on it.

Looks like JP→EN only, for now at least.

Oh well, Yomichan works for the time being. We’ll see what happens.

If worst comes to worst, couldn’t one just install some old version of a browser they don’t use just for mining with Yomichan? Seems like it would take a long while before Yomichan became completely unusable

That comes with some serious security risks though.

If you’re using it to browse the internet, but using it for (basically) offline use with ttu reader and epubs should be fine, no? :fearful:

Very sorry to hear this. (Announcement here for anyone interested).

Like many, I use Yomichan extremely often. Much more convenient to just shift-hover to look up a word. I’ve never used the Anki integration though. Support for monolingual dictionaries was the most important feature for me.

Only time will tell, but it’s a popular enough tool that I’ll be surprised if someone doesn’t pick up the development if/when things start breaking.

Can’t blame the author for wanting to pass on the torch.

I’ve never even used Anki in my life, the main, or rather the only thing I use Yomichan for is the popup dictionary, guess I’ll start looking into the alternatives soon

I use Yomichan to check words all the time. On a couple of occasions I made Anki cards with it, but I’ve never been able to keep up with Anki and I always end up quitting.
I’ll keep using it until it breaks. Maybe when it does I’ll check the source code to see where it’s failing and make my own version.

The ability to install any dictionary on it is very useful.

Looks like TheMoeWay is planning on maintaining it GitHub - themoeway/yomitan: Japanese pop-up dictionary extension for Chrome and Firefox

Oh nooo, I hope someone indeed decides to maintain it after all… I only installed this addon 2 weeks ago and I was loving it so much :broken_heart:

No, 10ten also has the ability to add custom dictionaries, including monolingual ones. In fact, it uses the exact same ‘interface’ to dictionaries that YomiChan uses, so in principle it should be able to connect to exactly the same ones.

That being said, I haven’t used this aspect of 10ten at all yet. I still just use the default JP>EN dictionary. I’ve only read about it on the website (when comparing between the two before I chose to install it). So I can’t speak from direct experience. But if you look it up yourself, I’m sure you’ll quickly get a definitive answer as to whether it will handle your favourite dictionary or not. I’m guessing from what I’ve read that it will.

I just updated Chrome and after restart, all my dictionaries are gone!
So Yomichan doesn’t work anymore. I tried adding a dictionary again but get an error “UnknownError: Internal error opening backing store for indexedDB.open.”
I went to the Yomitan link but it sends to the Yomichan extension.
Anybody has any idea on how to make it work again? Or alternatives?

Edit: I uninstalled and reinstalled the extension and it seems to work again. I also installed rikaikun in the meantime, it works fine, so now I have both x)

Yomichan is still working for me.

Yomitan isn’t yet in Chrome Web Store, but it can be installed in Developer Mode by downloading zip from GitHub. I tried that in Kiwi Browser on an Android smartphone.

I’m having issues with Yomichan Yomitan and Firefox
The issue is that it doesn’t work. Nothing happens when I press Shift.
Anyone has it working fine on Firefox?

You have to allow Yomitan access on every site separately AFAIK

At least that’s how I’m doing it

(Translation of the circled text: “Always allow on community.wanikani.com”)

Seems to work now! I allowed all the things, nothing happened, I restarted the browser and the extension was gone (why ?!), reinstalled, reimported the dictionaries, re-allowed all the things, and seems to work now!

Welp, that’s weird  Glad that it works now, though!
