But are you a representative sample of English speakers?
Huh? I just mean, when I saw it it didn’t occur to me that anyone was expecting everyone to vote and extrapolate a conclusion about the overall site demos. rhet makes a good point that many people don’t use the forums also.
Every poll on Wanikani has that selection bias. By the same reasoning How old are WaniWani users? is suspect.
I was joking… like, “but are you a representative sample of whether native English speakers will think their answers are boring?” … meh.
I will carry the flag for boring English speakers.
I think he probably is. The thread title is what’s your native language, right? I also assumed it was basically a thread for non-native English speakers. It’s not so much that I thought my answer would be boring, more that I didn’t think it would be relevant.
Spanish is my L2 and though I can’t help you translate I just wanted to say that sometimes if a mnemonic works better in Spanish I go with it.
That’s not really an issue when it comes to statistics. Unless you can prove that for some reason non-native English speakers are drawn to the forums more often than native English speakers one should assume both native and non-native speakers are drawn in equal amounts, thus making the forum sample representative. It’s the reason why in most elections the abstention isn’t considered a determining factor: Usually one expects abstention will hit both candidates about equally unless other conditions (voter supression, for example) that would make the election itself unfair exist. That’s why nobody ever refuses to acknowledge election results on the ground that there was 30% abstention.
There could be other biases affecting the poll, as @Leebo mentioned, but using the forum as the sample isn’t one of them.
DAMN YOU GUYS AND YOUR CONSENSUS
