Why do they teach some radicals long before using them?

Just started with lesson 13 yesterday and noticed that I just used the 疋 for the first time despite learning it back in level 9, when I checked the levels radicals I noticed there are two other radicals from level 9, that aren’t used until 16, “聿” and the “Pope”. I only noticed one of these in 8, “巳”, used first in 16, and one in level 10, “乃”, not used until 23, which is practically 3 months.

I know they sometimes move around Kanji and such so I wondered if this was related to that or just because they had to fit more radicals in before those levels and didn’t know where else to put them? it just seems like they could move them around to be a little closer to when there used but maybe I’m wrong. I understand the point is to remember the radicals for mnemonics and you’ll get reviews down the line, but It still just seems strange considering the vast majority seem to be used either used within the same level or only 1 level later.

I don’t really think its that big of a deal but it does seem interesting. Any insight would be appreciated!

Is bumping allowed? Still curious on this one

My guess is this might be the result of shifting kanji through levels.
Some kanji used to be on different levels (for example, 缶 used to be level 44, but is now level 13); maybe, in some cases they moved the kanji to another level, but forgot to move the radical?..

You can try bumping Mods for correction / improvement, or email.

Or otherwise post in Content suggestions and issues thread, if you don’t push for correction that hard. People sometimes reply to WaniKani > Content Updates threads too, providing it’s not a very old thread.

Did you take long breaks from WK? I have and I notice this all the time, I guess, if you start from scratch now, it would be in the “correct” order.

Hey! I don’t know the answer, but I passed this along to the content team to get their insight. My guess is reordering as well, but we’ll see!
