Normally words written in katakana are foreign words, mostly english ones. But for ゴミ (garbage - learnt in ゴミ箱 at level 16) I can’t see the original foreign word. Any ideas?
It’s not a foreign word - 塵 is the kanji.
This one is the “scientific terms” use of katakana, I guess.
Plenty of native words are written in katakana as well. That rule is not as universal as often described.
