I recently bought a reMarkable e-ink tablet to read/take notes on and since you can write and make marks in the margins and on/between the lines of e-books I thought it would be nice to tackle Japanese books on it using the process outlined by @taiyouseahere — in short, 1. read and underline/circle what you don’t know, 2. write a summary in English, 3. study the parts you’ve marked, 4. reread the passage, 5. write a new summary.
But to do this I need Japanese e-books that I can open on my tablet, i.e. DRM-free e-books, and I don’t know where to buy them. A quick search in English on Kagi didn’t yield any immediate candidates so I’m hoping some of my fellow forum-dwellers will know where to turn.
I know we can crack DRM but if possible I want to just give my money to someone who doesn’t lock their books behind DRM in the first place, thus rewarding good practices and avoiding all the hassle I imagine is involved in DRM removal.
Not sure if they have non DRM but I would try the Kobo (the Japanese site, not the USA) store. Nowadays, I think most publishers insist on DRM versions so the non-DRM books will be rare.
I know in the past there were ways to de-DRM purchased Kobo books using their app, but I think there was some controversy over whether that was still possible? Pinging @Akashelia because I think we’ve had a convo about this in the past.
I have a Japanese Amazon Account and use the kindle app for mac and I’m able to easily do what you’ve outlined here. I was able to get it simply by putting in a random Japanese address.
That would be really nice, unfortunately don’t know a way for that. The other way is only a hassle the first time though, when you have figured it out and installed the proper things, then it only takes a few minutes. You mention that you prefer not going this route so I’ll leave it at that, but if you change your mind let me know I can provide a description
At least for what I used, the de DRM tool once applied automatically strips DRM from all books in my calibre library. Since I use calibre to move books to my Kindle anyways, there isn’t actually any work involved for the deDRM process. The process of uploading the book makes it automatically DRM free!
Yep that’s the same process but finding the exact version of calibre compatible with the DRM plugin sometimes get problems, and seeing where the files are on your disk also can be a bit tedious. But those two things only give problem the first time, then it’s as fast and easy as you describe!
The first step is to buy books on https://books.rakuten.co.jp/
For that you need an account there with a physical address in Japan (mine is the address of a 7/11 somewhere in Aomori)
Let me know if you’re able to do that and find a book you like on there?
To clarify, are you talking about deDRMing on a mac? Or being able to do the required type of annotation on Kindle for mac?
Because if it’s the former, please teach me your ways I do all my deDRMing on a shitty old Windows PC and I’m terrified of it dying on me and losing that setup!
I know there’s a way to deDRM if you have an old Kindle serial, but I have not been able to get Kindle for mac to give me the required filetype without that.
So you are almost halfway now
You need Calibre (I have version 4.23) with DeDRM plugin, and see when you click the DeDRM button if you can see the list of books you can import
So that’s where you might need to make it point to the folder where your books are. We’ve solved this one before, will try to find the previous comments
