Where can I buy DRM-free Japanese e-books?

Resolved

So, I can find the file in the File Explorer but not via the Calibre Add Books button.

^ If this refers to using the Obok DeDRM button, not the Add Books button, then I’m no further anyway since clicking the Obok button just gives me the error message about not having any userkeys.

^^; I just installed the latest version of Calibre and now it works:)

Be careful with the address and maybe card you use. Rakuten shadowbanned me about a week after I signed up and have to assume they objected to one or both.

Do you remember which address you had used? Can’t do much about the card part though

Just clicked random on a Kyoto map and used that address, so no idea.

If you want an address in Japan that they theoretically shouldn’t have a problem with, you can set up a forwarding address through Tenso or a similar service. It’s a bit of a hassle to set it up initially because they have to verify your identity, but you will have a real, working mailing address under your own name. I set up a Tenso account ages ago to get goods shipped from Japan to the U.S., and I’ve been using that address with Rakuten without issue.

The danger, though, is that once you have a Tenso address, suddenly it’s really tempting to buy a bunch of physical objects from Japan and have them shipped to you…

yes from anywhere that will ship within Japan too, as long as you can import it, certain things you cannot, knives, alcohol depends on country etc…

but best thing about tenso is if you are traveling in Japan you can takkubin stuff to your tenso and then aggregate and ship it home instead of having to worry about luggage space (it’s costs a little bit more to do that but way worth eliminating the hassle of carrying stuff around)

which is bad too cuz you end up shipping back a lot more stuff :see_no_evil:
