What does "~" mean?

Sorry if this has been posted before. Searching for “~” did not produce results on google or in the forum search.

I’ve seen this a few times. 〜円 or ~才. What does the ~ mean?

It’s a placeholder indicating the word is used as a suffix or counter

円 and 才 are suffixes in these cases, and the ~ is standing in for a word, e.g. 百円, or 二才.
