What are your goals for Japanese in 2022 and have you been able to reach your goals for 2021?

I didn’t really have any specific goals for 2021 other than “get better” but I did just recently hit 60, and also took the N3 this year (which I’m pretty sure I was extremely overprepared for, and probably should’ve taken the N2). That said! Next year my goals are:

  • Finish learning the Jouyou kanji
  • Read 200 pages worth of novels/light novels every month
  • Start weaning myself off of SRS (less “huge decks,” more “adding in words as I find them”)
  • Focus more on my spoken Japanese (lots of shadowing, using a “language parent” to learn from, and studying pitch accent)
  • Take the N1 (might not work out, but I want to see if I can get there in a year)

I reset wanikani sometime last year after an almost 2yr hiatus stopping at level 22. I want to reach 30 before the end of next year at a minimum and if I’m luck I’ll hit level 40. I’ll hit 18 this week so I’m not too far off.

My goal for 2021 was to read 100 活字 books. (So, not manga)
If I allow up to 33% of 4koma in the content, I just reached 100 today.
If I limit myself to up to 20%, I only have 97, and at the strictest level, 96.
I want to count the one with some 4 koma (it’s about the 百人一首 and it was informative enough that I want to keep it in my Bookmeter), but I’d rather avoid the other 3 (first 3 volumes of うちの3姉妹, which is pretty fun, but very light in content).

Anyway, I still have a few days, so I may not need to lower my standards.

I do not know what I’ll do in 2022. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that I’ll be reading some more.

I want to keep going, that’s technically it.
The joy of finally understanding something what has been said or being able to read a random kanji or even a sentence is amazing.

I started in the middle of this year and it’s been rough, but I managed to do at least 3-4 sessions a week on WK.

My goal for 2022 is to keep going the best I can and have lots of fun with the language.

PS: Akiramenaide, minna.

2021:

  • I wanted to go as far ahead in WK as I could.
  • I wanted to start tobira. I’m now at lesson 5.
  • I wanted to start taking lessons again after several years. I started a month ago and I’ve already taken 3 lessons.

I wasn’t the quickest learner in 2021, life was hectic and sometimes I only had time to do some of my reviews but I kept going and I’m happy about it…

2022

  • I want to continue taking lessons since I want to develop my talking skills.
  • reaching level 60 on WK.
  • listen to Japanese pod 101 intermediate contents and hopefully finishing it.
  • studying the remaining lessons of tobira.

I want to improve my grammar knowledge most of all (and getting to level 60). Also I’d like to be able to have meaningful conversations.

Started actually actively learning/studying Japanese pretty late this year because of my exams so I didn’t really set a lot of goals

2021 Goals
  1. Finish the whole series of Yotsubato :ballot_box_with_check: (But with the help of the WaniKani book club lol)

  2. Get started on WaniKani and finish all the free levels (currently in the middle of the last free level, I’ll hopefully finish my goal by this week)

  3. Find helpful resources that I can stick with through my Japanese learning journey

2022 Goals
  1. Reach at least level 48 in WaniKani

  2. Finish BunPro’s N5-N3 curriculum

  3. Finish 12 episodes of anime (aka. active listening)/ up my listening time

  4. Finish one light novel (currently looking at また、同じ夢を見てた, which I have been delaying for who knows how long)

  5. Finish 5 manga that is not targeted at children

  6. Make my own study log in WaniKani (keep a look out for it :eyes:)

Good luck everyone!

Lots of things changed this past year and I didn’t make all of my goals. However, I feel like I built up a little platform and am peeking over the wall now. Results from last month were encouraging. I need a little more time to finish up what I wanted to acompolish last year, perhaps about two months. I’m feeling much more confident about this upcoming year.

I only seriously started my Japanese learning journey this year (2021) and I didn’t really set out with any goals other than to stick with it, which I did! :3

My 2022 Goals (subject to change) are:

  • Keep on sticking with Japanese
  • Get through the remaining 14 chapters of the first Minna no Nihongo book and start Beginner II (or whatever its called)
  • Get to level 20 in Wanikani
  • Study for the N5 of the JLPT, maybe take it bc last year they didn’t have the test in my area and I only got 8/14 of the questions right on the sample test (i only got one right in the reading category :sob:)
  • Practice writing and also remembering hiragana and katakana

That’s about it for now :+1:

I reflected on my goals for 2021 here.

Goals for 2022:

  • Review Minna no Nihongo みんなの日本語 初級 2

  • Complete a so-called Intermediate textbook (either Tobira or Quartet or both, maybe MnN).

  • Maybe reach the upper 40s on WaniKani (although I am not in a rush here. My main goal is confidence and steady progress). I’m basically on the 5-year plan now.

  • Finish Tango N3 and possibly start/finish Tango N2

  • Go through all of the material in すぐに使える 日本語会話超ミニフレーズ200 (Speak Japanese!)

  • Complete one volume in a manga book or two, either Conan or Major or both.

  • Understand my family better

Sorry son, can’t delete threads…

Hm. I’d say I failed quite spectacularly. Most of my failures were outside of my control though.

Original goal: Reach at least lvl 40 in Wanikani, travel to Japan again and travel around, read a ton of books, getting as much exposure as possible. Alongside a host of other non-japanese related goals.

What happened: First half of the year went splendidly only for the second half to be completely wrecked by that damn virus going around. Not only did Japan keep their borders closed but I was infected with probably every strain in existence of Influenza, Covid, common colds and spaceage superborked mega-bacteria.
I’ve been out of both training seriously and studying properly for months on end. My head feels like a bloated sponge, tightly followed by my body in a decrepit second place. I lost my motivation for quite a bit, but I’ve fought back and hopefully next year will be better.

Goals for next year:
Japanese goals for next year aren’t set super high since I got a whole lot of other stuff going on. (Started education, moving, new job, martial arts etc.)

  1. Get to level 40-45 on wanikani.
  2. Keep on doing Italki lessons.
  3. Travel southern Japan for 6 months, praticing Martial arts and Japanese meanwhile.

Hello,
This is my first post here ever. Hihi

  • Try to read kana more fluently.
  • Learn and… Guess more Kanji/radicals to see them in a normal text. "Ah,I’ve just learn this Kanji. This could mean… "
  • Learn Japanese to lower stress while quarantine and to avoid reading much such news.

Wish happy new year!!

My only goal for 2021 was to pass JLPT N1, I failed in July and took it again in December, now I’m waiting for the results

For 2022, my goals would be …

  • continue WK (I’m currently on vacation mode)
  • read a few books in Japanese
  • use more grammar patterns when I write in Japanese (I only use like 5 different grammar forms and I want to diversify that!)

(+ N1 depending on the results)

Good luck to everyone :sparkles: :sparkles: 頑張りましょう!!

I only re-started learning Japanese a few months ago, quite spontaneously, so I didn’t have any goals, but for 2022 I will try to:

  • keep up with WK reviews (should be at 0 when I go to bed every day), keep my apprentice items between 80 and 100 (no set number of lessons per day, I’ll go by how much room I have in my apprentice stack and how I feel)
  • similarly keep up with bunpro (I just started using it a few days ago, will probably upgrade to lifetime during the sale)
  • keep taking classes if they’re held
  • read at least 1 manga/novel
  • consume more Japanese content in general (tv shows with and maybe without subs, music, audio books, podcasts etc.)
  • write daily (got a dated journal specifically for Japanese practice)
  • pass JLPT N4, and if that works out in the summer, try for N3 in the winter
  • maybe get a tandem partner in my city for more listening/speaking practice

When I started learning Japanese back in February of this year, I didn’t give my self any goals, since I didn’t know I’ll fall in love with this language. Anyway, I did reach N4 though, so for 2022, my goal is reach N3.

What I wrote last year for 2021:

  • Really stick to WaniKani.
  • Start and finish LVL2 Japanese Graded Readers.
  • Complete N4 Grammar (Start Bunpro).
  • Read My first whole manga volume.
  • And at the end of next year I want to join my first WaniKani book club!

Successfully did all these! Even nearly finished N3 grammar and currently part of the Way of the Househusband bookclub! My progress on WaniKani was pretty poor, however I did stick to doing it every day.

For 2022:

  • Complete N3 & N2 grammar.
  • Reach LVL 60 in WaniKani. Time to finish this.
  • Read a lot more. This time next year, I hope to have completed 3 novels (this is a pretty big goal for me, as manga takes me quite a while).
  • Immerse! & have fun

I didn’t set up any clear goals for this year, as I wasn’t really sure how if I’d keep up with studying Japanese so much. But throughout the year I made some small goals and was very happy to clear them out. Let’s see what next year brings.

what I did in 2021

  • finished Tobira
  • I started doing WaniKani in June and have kept on doing it (even though this last month has been very slow)
  • tried out JLPT N3 (very unsure about passing, but it’s okay)

goals for 2022

  • getting to level 60 on WaniKani
  • reading a novel in Japanese
  • using Japanese sources for my thesis research
  • taking the JLPT N2

I feel your pain. I also tried to apply for a language school through gogonihon. Rona really ruined this huh …

Who knows, maybe we would’ve met each other there and became friends?
