Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

きゃ ! :flushed: All-purpose きゃ’s this week lol

Rin being a good wingwoman!

Vocab I liked:

ずっと - continuously

っぽい - -ish, -like

異文化交流 - cultural exchange

みたいな - something like that, seeming

This chapter had a lot more of characters only expressing the first half of their thought and trailing off… but that’s just shoujo for you!

In the panel where Itusomi is talking to the other women, Yuki recalls her thought that she’s just めずらしい to him and wonders if that’s why he’s talking to her :frowning:

聞こえない私がめずらしくて異文化交流みたいな感じで送ったのかな

(deaf me) (rare cultural exchange) (seemingly feels like) (maybe?)

Maybe he feels like I’m some kind of rare cultural exchange student because I’m deaf

I had trouble parsing what Itsuomi asks Yuki (whether it’s more “what’re you doing here” or “why haven’t you texted me”) but I guess it’s in reference to whatever event their class was canceled for? or something

Some interesting bits from the English version:

The サークル is listed as “the International Club,” which sounds a bit more formal than I was thinking

Itsuomi’s text from last chapter is translated as “Let me into Yuki’s world?” - works pretty well

Yeah, from what I can tell a “circle” is self-organized and pretty laid-back, as opposed to a more formal university-backed club.

The recently aired anime Food for the Soul featured a university food circle, and showed how groups like that get formed and operate.

Reread Weeks 1-6 after doing this week’s reading, again. I’m not doing it every week, but I do think doing it some weeks, especially when I’m feeling less sure of what’s going on after the week in question’s reading, is a good reinforcement, increasing the degree to which it is comprehensible input. I always understand more of the previous weeks’ readings in addition to more of the new week’s reading after doing it

I’m trying to avoid direct jp->en translation or lookups

This is SO helpful, thank you!!

I’m not sure about what Itsuomi was asking her either, but when she wrote her response to his question - "本当はしたいですでも大学なので - I interpreted that as, “I really want to but I have class,” meaning maybe he was inviting her to do something together?

This part wasn’t super clear to me either, even though I think I understand it language wise.

I think I would translate it as: “You’re not doing this today??” And when he says “this”, he’s referring to the gesture he’s doing.
As far as what the gesture itself means, I have two guesses haha

Maybe he means her more over the top reactions and emotions? Just because that pose/gesture he does matches her really happy cute moments haha. Example:

My other guess, is he’s just referring to sign language, or teaching him sign language. Maybe she doesn’t want to draw a ton of attention at University using sign language with Itsuomi/teaching him?? But I’m not sure, hence why maybe it’s the other option haha

If anyone else has other ideas or thoughts I would love to hear it!

Ohhh, so when Yuki wrote 本当はしたいですでも大学なの she meant “I really want to but we’re at school” - that makes a lot more sense, I guess she wouldn’t use 大学 to mean “going to class.” In that case, I like your first interpretation, since it seems like he’s noticing that she seems more subdued than the last time he saw her.

This is how I read it as well. After he asks it, she’s thinking 恥ずかしい which I feel goes in line with her typed response.

Hahah I actually got a clue on this part by checking the official English version - it felt a little like cheating but it made it easier to go back and break down the original sentence.

This week was a bit more challenging for me, so I expect there will be a few more mistakes or mistranslations. I’ll read through the thread and see what has been answered / explained already before asking anything.

This one was tough for me but I think Rin is being defensive “There’s men in our circle too! It’s not all beautiful women! (and Itsuomi)”

This was mentioned earlier but 大学 might be used as “at school (right now)” or “going to a class”

Thanks, this makes so much more sense. I was wondering why her being in college was an obstacle when it wasn’t before lol

pg 66

Haha, for some reason when I read this I interpreted it as Rin reassuring Yuki that Itsuomi had been a “proper man” up til now, i.e., that he hadn’t been messing around with the beautiful women in the サークル. I’m not surprised that that wasn’t quite right… ちゃんと is a tricky one for me!

“きゃー” is kind of like an “eep” sound, but it is more like a cute… squee?? Mainly you’ll see it with fangirls in manga haha. Like if a cool character is doing a cool thing and all the girls in the background are like "キャー!!” haha

I believe 「ちゃんと」 is tied to the 「見なきゃ」part, they were just split up a little

Hello, everyone!
Just finished this part, sorry I’m late! Things are sooo interesting
Just a question:

Page 60

Does 白い in 白い気持ち have a specific meaning? I understood it as an unknown/unnamed feeling, but I’m not sure

She’s alluding to snow here, also seen in the panel art. She keeps coming back to snow analogies for her growing feelings, as since her name is Yuki that feels tied to her identity.

Hence the white (白い), fluffy feelings piling up.

Makes sense, thank you so much
