Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Our rival appears! ドキドキ
A real cliffhanger this week!
I liked their misreading conversation ‘you’re going where?!’

Vocab:

良さげ - looking good, seems good

そもそも - after all, anyway

幼馴染 - childhood friend

ばっか - only, nothing but

A little attempt at the conversation on page 82! It’s rough when つける could be “to attach something” “to turn something on” “to wear/put something on”

それって補聴器つけた方がいいんじゃね

It should be better with that hearing aid attached (in use?), right?

つけたんだよ

It is in use.

つけてんなら聞こえんじゃね

If she’s using it then why can’t she hear?

つけても音拾えねタイプなんだよ

It’s the type used more for picking up on sounds. (I checked the English and it seems つけても indicates “Even when she’s using it (she can’t pick out sounds)”)

よくわからんがうん おうしまたな

Ah, I don’t really get it. See you later!

I’d say タイプ is used here in its sense of referring to a type of person. And ねぇ would be slang for ない. So I read it as “She’s the type that can’t pick out sounds even if she’s wearing it.”

Hey everyone, still lagging a bit behind, but I am surely going to catch up this week!
Excited to join the discussion again, and huge thanks for your posts during the previous weeks, it’s helping me catch up!

Read this week’s reading, and got half-way through re-reading weeks 1-7

EDIT: finished the re-read

I don’t get how Itsuomi can be a college student and also constantly be jetting off places, lol. Wouldn’t he be constantly missing class??

pg 80

My least favorite character has arrived, and so far he’s just as annoying in Japanese as he was in English…

pg 81

“耳 聴こえねーから髪長い方.” She can’t hear, so her hair is long doesn’t seem quite right, especially because they don’t discuss the hearing aid until later. Is this more like “The one with the long hair can’t hear?” And the から is explaining that that’s why he doesn’t invite her to drinking parties?

Glad I wasn’t the only one confused by the hearing aid conversation. Got pretty frustrated trying to decipher all that.

I agree with this. I think it’s a bit confusing because she’s wearing the hearing aids when they don’t do anything, but it may be that she just wears them to signal to others that she’s Deaf.

Actually you did an awesome job IMO!

My thoughts on pg83

でもちゃんと覚えてんだー…
But I remember it perfectly…

Here 覚える has the connotation of “to memorize” or “to learn,” and this is something Yuki is thinking about Oushi.

どっちなのかな?自分じゃ恋か憧れかわかんないよ
Which is it, I wonder? I don’t know if it’s love or a crush

Both here and throughout, 憧れ means something more like “admiration.”

Thank you for the clarifications!

A lot of new vocab for me this week and last, but I’ve been studying grammar more lately, and that’s been helping me a lot. I love when I can identify a pattern I studied recently! The most difficult part this week was definitely Oushi’s conversation about the hearing aid. Big thank you to everyone who sorted through that already!

Hello everyone :waving_hand:t2:
I’m late again :sob:

We have a new character this week, I’m curious about what he’s up to!

Interesting sentence this week: 手話でいじわるなことばっか言ってくるよ. So 桜志くん might be one of those types who bullies the girl they like, right?
