Week 4 ギャルと恐竜 ・ Gal and Dino 🦕 (Absolute Beginner Book Club)

Some quick and dirty feedback, read the rest of the thread for more details.

Page 17

to the room it was needed but - that’s いる, have/exists, so “it is in my room”. There’s also a から, so “since yesterday” or “starting yesterday” - It has been in my room since yesterday (implied: so thats why there’s a dino here)

入れる (bring in, let in) - letting it in my room
マズイ = mazui, bad-tasting, gross, troublesome, problematic → Letting it in my room, was it problematic?
こわがらない = “are not scared”
99% of the time you see 大丈夫, think “its fine” or “I’m okay”, etc → If my cats aren’t afraid of him, it’s fine

Page 18

Again, “it’s fine” rather than safe. → Well then.. (looks like) it’s fine…

猫のエサ is cat food, 余ってる is “there is too much”, いります is need this time (you can tell because she conjugated it, “exist” conjugates to います) → I have too much cat food, so do you need some?

助かる isn’t a command, just a statement, more like “you are a great help to me”.

The thing with の方 you’ll have to go back up and read other people’s comments, I have trouble with ほう in general. Translation is more like “No, the one who was helped more is me”.

Page 19

This なあ is probably more like def 3 by context, getting Dino’s attention.

今日も is “today, also”, combined with “stay the night” and a ?, we have → Are you staying over again today?

Page 20

なら and もし are both “if, perhaps”, “Perhaps if you stay the night”
Toothbrush Tooth + burashi
タオル is taoru, towel
Those とかs go after nouns to list stuff
なきゃいけね is a very casual way to say “must”, so “must buy” → If you spend the night, we probably have to buy stuff like a tootbrush, towels, I think.

Maybe it’s just me, but the way that first panel is, it reminds me of the part in romance plots where the MC is professing deep feelings but can’t be straight forward.

Like if this was chapter 20 in a romance and instead of Dino, it was a love interest Pages 19-20 could play out exactly the same.

I am amused by this, and hope it’s intentional.

ok maybe this is my 変人へんじん mind, but it’s not until chapter 3 that i really decided that the manga is casting 恐竜 as more of a pet and not as a boyfriend… based mostly on Kaede’s inner monologue at the beginning about bringing home somebody while drunk. and tbh i’m not 100% sure that i won’t change my mind later

Given this has been a light hearted/comedic manga, I would not be surprised if the joke is a bit of a blurred line between the two, at least from a trope standpoint.

wait, how did you manage to apply ふりがな text :open_mouth:

If you select the text and hit “quote”, you can see the exact code used:

<ruby>変人<rt>へんじん</rt></ruby>

There’s some extra tags you can use that add assorted functionalities, but that’s the basics of what you need.

Three are also ruby text generators online. You can absolutely do it yourself, but it’s a lot easier to have it generated.

Also discovered that I can select and quote :joy: thanks

Yep. It’s half the magic behind being able to quote multiple different posts at once. :slightly_smiling_face:

Funny thing is that I used to be a moderator for the largest italian online forum for 5ish years and I basically forgot how to use strings and basic tools :joy:

Hi. I am reading this late, trying to catch up. I liked the idea of putting my translation attempts on so will do this before reading any of this weeks posts. It’s more for my own accountability! I am sure I have made loads of mistakes and will read all the comments after.

Page 17

Ah. Mrs landlady, good morning.
Ah Kaede chan…and…dinosaur…
Er, he was put in my room the day before yesterday
Is that so?
Is it bad that he’s in my room?
I don’t want the cats to be scared at home. Is he safe?

Page 18

Well, they’re safe
Er, is there some leftover cat food on me?
I didn’t eat it
Oh I’ll help you
No, help me get away… (couldn’t really work out these bits at all)

Page 19

I say - let’s stay at home together today
Eh? What?
Let’s do it quickly

Page 20

If we stay home
I think I have to buy you a toothbrush and a towel, right?
Ok. Well I’m off to the discount store

Not sure if I’ve used the drop downs right either - first time trying to use them sorry

It looks like you’ve just put headings and not drop downs.

When you edit your post (click the pencil button that you’ll see below it), go to the + button in the upper right corner of the posting window. There’s an option called hide details.

[details="Summary"]
This text will be hidden
[/details]

That will place the above text into your editor and you can replace “this text will be hidden” with your translations. You can also change the text in quotes, Summary, to be the page numbers if you want.

For a time saving trick, you can also select the text you want to be hidden before you click on hide details and it will pop it in the middle of the markup block for you.

Ideally it’d be good if you can do that so that other people who may not have read the chapter yet don’t accidentally read your translations.
