Interesting chapter! How did Magata Shiki escape from the apartment? The conversation she had with the lady she killed gave me association to chatgpt with all the overconfident answers and unwavering belief. As long as you seem sure enough, you appear to be the one in the right.

RIP Shinjo. That’s why you don’t foster supervillains, I guess. (I thought they were setting up Shinjo to slowly unravel over the course of the book as she grows more and more jealous over Hanawa’s obsession with Moe but I guess not.)

Also, the hotel room DOES have a chain?? I know they’re actually not that hard to bypass but you’d think the girls would lock/mention it given the circumstances…

We’ll see what happens with the apartment disappearance, after all it just seems like a regular apartment. The disappearance of the elevator in the church is also interesting. Right now I have three ideas:

  1. The elevator has 2 stories, and the storehouse is the second story. So it was just shifted down one floor to “hide” it.
  2. I believe she said that the door panel was indented, and the wall panels are actually adjustable. The elevator door was made flush, and the storeroom door was indented, so when Moe went for the elevator she was tricked into going to the wrong panel.
  3. A fake wall was put up on that side of the church (and probably the other one, to keep it symmetric), so that the elevator door is now in the back wall of the storeroom. (I think this one is pretty silly, but in ch1 I think Hanawa said something about the church appearing bigger in the darkness than at daytime, and I just can’t help but feel that that line will actually be relevant to something.)
(My first thought was a second church but it seems we’re not actually doing that.)

Hanawa and Fujiwara are crazy, as expected. Not sure if I think Hanawa is more or less of a jerk for being ‘honest’ with Moe in private.

The first book had a bunch of VR scenes, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the events in this book were also in VR. Was Shiki ever even in the apartment?

Other than VR, my only theory for the church is that there’s an exact copy of it directly underneath it, and the elevator brought Moe to that copy.

I really like this idea! The only ‘issue’ is that it’d mean that the elevator/first church have nothing to do with the crime scene/second church, which would just be odd from a meta/narrative perspective, but we’ll see.

Also, when the crime first happened I didn’t trust Shinjou’s account at all, but then when she seemed actually freaked out I started to trust her again, but there does seem to be funny business with Shiki. It’d be a lame answer, but if the elevator is there and Shinjou is lying, all you need is a way to break the windows up top.

Now that escalated quickly in all directions…

Yet another victim, this time the secretary and love affair of the vice president. Apparently murdered by Shiki - but where did she go? And where did the elevator in the church go? In both cases we had a storage room full of stuff - this is highly suspicious to me.

Also, in the very last passage the vice president told Moe all about how crazy in love Hanawa is with her, and that he built the whole company and the church and everything just for her, and that he has lots of photos of her… Together with how he treated her previously, that somehow evokes pictures like this:

but Moe is apparently very moved by his attitude. Maybe this is because he is the first man who really shows interest in her? Other than Saikawa, who stays so cold-blooded all the time, where she has to fight for every little bit of affection or even attention from his side?

How will this turn out in the end? Is she really interested in dropping Saikawa and marrying Hanawa? That would be a really dramatic ending, I guess  On the other hand, I guess she is just too well-behaved and stays with her initial intention anyway. Let’s see how this continues!

Ugh, I know right? Why would you be anything but revolted by that? But then she does answer yes when that vice pres guy asked her if he scared her, so there’s that at least.

Loving all the theories!

Personally a fan of the 2-storied elevator one, but that mention of how the church looks bigger at night is interesting as well…
