I like that she’s completely oblivious to what happened the day in the document room. :laughing:

Interesting. Looks like someone might want to bury some evidence? Unfortunately for him, I assume Monica might catch him if things go missing or are changed in documents that she already looked through.

モニカにとって才能は呪いだ。いつだって、モニカの欲しかったものを奪っていく。 ──父も、友人も。

Huh. Her talent took her father away from her? Either I’m misunderstanding, or there’s a story here.

「私の話を聞いてるのか、モニカ・ノートン！」
「あ、はい、えっと……あの……」
モニカがもじもじと指をこねながら言い淀んでいると、誰かがモニカの肩をポンと叩いた。
「やぁ、順調かい？」

Could you not? We were finally getting somewhere.

But anyway, I’m happy that Cyril switched from “You’re trash that is not worth being in the prince’s presence” to “…why do you treat yourself like trash?” I was hoping that actually starting to work with Monica would warm him up (ahem!) a bit. And we got a tiny tidbit more of Monica’s past along the way.

(And to be honest, I’m getting a bit sick of almost the whole student council, their teacher, a few bullies and their dog treating Monica like garbage. Especially after the prince appointed her, of all things! Nobody even asked why, everyone was just like “I disagree!!”)

I’ve been sick of that since chapter 1 so I refrained from commenting in these threads because I want to complain about this every week. At times it feels like I’m reading some kind of humiliation fetish erotica.

The part that shocked me this week was the bit about Cyril conjuring icecubes to punish Monica if she did anything wrong. You can’t tell me that’s not some kind of bizarre sadistic fetish. It’s completely uncalled for in the context of the scene.

Yeah that was actually a nice surprise after that, it’s nice to see a bit of texture and nuance to this character. He seems to be the “harsh but fair (and also has a weird BDSM ice fetish)” character.

That comment of his got an initial “…really now, that shit again?” from me, but reading on it’s heavily implied that he (sometimes?) has to regularly conjure ice cubes due to some kind of medical/magical condition. Monica quickly suspected it, and then it was all but confirmed when Felix commented on it, furthered by more thoughts of Monica on the topic. So while that still makes that comment rather callous, I don’t think that using them on Monica was his intention at all and he wouldn’t even have made up this “threat” if she hadn’t asked. (And if it is a medical condition that causes pain/strain he might also be a bit cranky because of it.)

So, no excuses for his callous comment here, but I don’t think it’s as bad as you believe it to be.

Featured Kanji of the Week: 睨

This week

Not much to say about this week…we learn some more about Cyril’s ice problem, meet Neil properly for the first time and Thornley grow ever more sus, but apart from that, nothing much happens.

Definitely a story here. Wonder how long we’re going to have to wait until we get the whole story. At least we got some more info about her former friend from Minerva. I hope he’ll show up at some point. After all this buildup, I want to meet him.

Summary

I still don’t like the price treating Monica as a toy, but I liked Cyrill’s development. And I also got it like he didn’t actually conjured icicles for torturing, but because he had to do that. I wonder what is it.

We’ve read through more than half of a book, but the story still feels a bit like just a beginning. I wonder if there will be some logical conclusion at the end of the first book.

chapter thoughts

I’m a bit disappointed there’s been no follow-up on Monica’s suspicion that someone is using mind influencing magic. At least, it was implied that she had a suspicion, I think. But I really appreciate the bit where Cyril asks why she won’t believe in herself and she reflects on how self-confidence is not something you just get for free even if you are extremely talented and powerful.
