So I had a surprise break over Christmas and New Year. Life happened, good times.
Anyway I figured, as has always happened with other resources, I’d have forgotten everything. Turns out, no. I’m chipping through about 400 kanji with relative ease. It’s a great feeling. I got my first burns the other day.
If you’re just starting out. And this feels like a pointless slog or you’re frustrated that nothing is going in. It’s really not pointless, it is a slog, but stuff is going in. If you’re doing it earnestly you will get better. Even if life gets in the way you can come back.
Lol same. I didn’t touch Wanikani for 6 months and came back this year with almost 300 reviews waiting for me. I was going to reset assuming I had forgotten a lot of it. I decided not to and was blown away how much had been committed to my long term memory. It’s wild!
Yeah, feels pointless and then you start reading and you get a “how the f do I know this?”. You don’t feel the progress but it’s like using translating goggles when you see kanji in the wild. It’s a weird feeling.
I started using WaniKani back in 2013. Used it for about six months or so. Dropped it.
Years later, I’ve gotten better at Japanese, but I’ve been terrible at keeping up my kanji study.
I realized that all the kanji I studied with WaniKani back in 2013 are all the kanji that I still remember today, so I figured I should come back and actually do all of WaniKani since it seems that, like you said, WaniKani works!
I geeked over the fact that I was able to read 東北大学 in the wild. Despite only advancing 2 levels last year I was able to remember most of the readings I’d learned. This really does work, it just takes time. \(۶•̀ᴗ•́)۶//
