Names, places, and everything else in between in kanji (a lot of kana too, but those are much easier on the eyes!) so it’s good to be able to read fonts that are “thick” – content notwithstanding.
I think the change of font shouldn’t be a big drama. On the opposite, it’s a good thing because, as other before me mentioned, it gives people a glimpse of real life written Japanese.
If the change of font makes harder reviewing items, then the problem is not so much the font, but rather the fact that a kanji has not been properly studied/memorised/retained in the brain. Just my 2 cents here.
The problem is not so much the font and more that this is the second
disruptive update in under two weeks thats being hoisted onto the user
with no prior warning or announcement and in a “eat it or leave it” manner.
If i level up i get a completely pointless giant banner over half the screen
that i need to confirm away but they cant be bothered to have even a 3-day warning
for these updates.
And if you want to go deep you can ask why updates like this are comming out right after
the christmas sale and not before.
Just tried using a different browser (Safari, I usually use Chrome) - still does the same thing.
I also cleared my browsing data in Chrome, nothing helped.
I resorted to only using the app the last few days, but it’s taking me so much longer to type the answers on touch rather than keyboard, that’s it’s really starting to affect my reviews (I’m quite a heavy user, doing a level per week)
If it keeps going like this, I personally don’t think I’ll be using the website anymore
Presumably only if the user has a Google account. In which case the user has already consented to Google’s tracking. If a user doesn’t have a Google account, then they should not be able to map an IP address to a user, and in fact doing so, would be a violation of GDPR by Google, not WaniKani.
As an aside, that CookieYes site referenced by TofuguScott seems to have a vested interest in stirring the pot on this matter as they sell cookie consent software solutions. So of course they welcome the referenced German court decision because it helps sell their software.
But even so, a simple look at the network traffic on a reload of WaniKani’s homepage shows that it does POSTs to www.google-analytics.com and GETs from half a dozen other third party sites.
This is classic distraction. Pay no attention to the real privacy problem, we’ll fix the fonts.
To single out google fonts here seems a reaction to a badly argued court case and hypocritical while they continue to use google analytics.
What WK could have done is force log out everyone during a maintenance window, and then ask them to consent to requests to google fonts or they get served the non-google font. Pretty sure 98% of their users would have just clicked OK.
As part of the Wanikani Icons Update I adjusted the default font weight to be 350 down from the original 400 weight. Hopefully this middle ground between too thin and too thick helps some people.
