Can anyone explain why Aya says さすがにないっしょ ?

From what I gather さすがにない is a kind of statement to express disbelief or having the opposite opinion. So in this case, when Mitsuki says she wouldn’t even have seen the sakura trees if she hadn’t run into Aya, Aya responds with something like “oh surely that’s not true” - as in, surely Mitsuki would at some point have seen the trees that were literally all around her.
っしょ is just a contraction of でしょう

It’s rather telling, from an etymological standpoint, that both kanji in 嫉妬 have the woman radical.

I’m going through this vol again and the amount of teen slang is… well, it’s a lot. Once you know it’s slang it’s not so bad but sometimes it’s a contraction or a grammar form or just straight up not in the dictionary and you forget you can search outside of jisho.

Not too much time today, but I did get a start with this week’s reading.
p.52-54
In three consecutive pages, we get three instances of the kanji 譲. I got the general meaning of this kanji, but had trouble figuring out how it was used. Perhaps because it’s three different shades of meaning in three different sentences?
p. 52, Joe: 譲はみつきが一番大事ななだから
I admit (yield/concede) that Mitsuki is the most important thing for me
p. 53, Kanna: 譲?
Are you putting it [going together] off?
p. 54: Kanna(?): 譲と私はいつか終わるんだって
If I’m honest with myself, [I know] that it would end eventually.
Did I get the gist of these?

Uh, isn’t that the name of Mitsuki’s uncle? It’s not really a name in itself, in that case it’s just he name “Jou”

This is said by Kanna, “For Jou, Mitsuki is the most important thing in the world”
This is closer to “Jou? (What’s wrong?)”
“(Honestly, I already knew), that we (li.: Jou and I) would split eventually”

This was such a good chapter! I’m actually enjoying this volume more than volume 1 so far! The first volume was super good, but I do feel like the story it told was a little simpler, and now it’s continuously becoming more complex and more interesting.

That’s what I’ve been wondering too, but I don’t think that he was her only or her closest living relative at the time that he was wanting to move to the US. I think the conversation would have been somewhat different if that were the case. And I’m guessing one of her parents was an English native speaker, and had to be around long enough to pass that on (based on her first interactions with Kanna that we see).
Are you sure it’s not a slurred version of どこか?

This week: a crash course in Ryukyu dialect.
Page 82, the middle panel, のび太じゃん is clearly some kind of Doraemon allusion that’s going completely over my head - can anyone clarify?
That was a nice ending to the reading, though. I was concerned this whole “don’t be honest about what you want” thing that Aya currently has going on was gonna build to a crisis. Guess that’ll come next week.

Am I correct that みつあや is a contraction of Aya and Mitsuki’s name? And this reflects the formation of the group around them (in which they’ll look out for one another)?

DeepL gave me a translation along the lines of “Koga-san is a bit of a wimp, as expected”. My further research didn’t turn up anything about オド. Can anyone makes sense of オドついて? Is it an abbreviation of おどるく + つく, i.e. easily startled or something?

「おにーさん」の時みたいにしてりゃいーのに
Just checking my translation here. “It would be nice if she could be like when she’s onii-san.” where りゃ is short for いれば.

Tough sentence. Not sure whether the entire sentence relates to Mitsuki, or whether some parts relate to Aya herself. My best guess: Aya is musing that she herself will have to make a place for herself to belong (i.e. together with Koga-san), in order to [not go anywhere / be left behind?]. I have some trouble putting it all together…

I read it as Aya has to make a place for Koga to belong so that Koga won’t leave. (Specifically, leave for America with Kanna. That little bit of hanging tension hasn’t been resolved yet.)
