Do any of you know if it’s possible to filter VNs for Japanese text somewhere? I filter for Japanese, but there are so many games that have Japanese voices and English text. I would like to filter them out if possible…
Did you remove English from your filter so Japanese is the only thing it is searching for? When I do that, it only shows me titles that include Japanese text.
Mine is working perfectly fine on Firefox, but the creator seems to be waiting to move it to Chrome based on what the page says. I dunno anything about chrome add-ons anymore, but if you’re willing to use Firefox, it’s here:
I resisted for a long time because of the things I had set up on Chrome, but so glad I’m finally off it. An excuse to get started not using Chrome probably isn’t the worst thing, too.
I’m in the process of migrating. But I forgot my Firefox password and since they encrypt everything with it, resetting wipes all my FF data. Thankfully I have a desktop logged in before that, because FF android app doesn’t allow bookmark export (nor printing natively!).
Those glaring issues have kept me from fully switching (am salty about them), but I guess I’ll need to figure it out so I can get my VN reading flow working again…
I honestly didn’t know about all that; that’s rough. I used firefox many years ago, ended up having some severe bug with it that got me to switch to Chrome, but that was such a long time ago who knows what was up with it.
Then Japanese tools made me reluctant to switch, already knowing the Google-associated browser was generally not the best idea, but as news about crackdowns on add-ons and the like kept coming I knew it was inevitable sometime. Got “lucky” that my computer pretty severely broke last year so I built a new one and was forced to start fresh
Hope the transition goes better for you from here at least
For playing, I have system locale in Japanese and use Magpie for upscaling 16:9 games to 1440p. If it’s 4:3, I use my older CRT monitor.
For mining I only use Textractor. I manually translate unknown words by alt+tabbing to Jisho.
I usually create cards in bulk from notes in a text document and screenshot folder. Recently I’ve started recording audio too with Audacity program.
front: word+sentence
back: meaning, hiragana, screenshot, audio
It’s not as easy to automate this as with ASBPlayer and videos (I set up a deck specially for this and it’s amazing, except for lengthy dictionary definitions).
I think the main thing you’re missing out on is the browser add-on Yomitan – you can load dictionaries in that, the stuff Jisho pulls from and/or Japanese dictionaries too, and get definitions by hovering over any word and pressing shift, which is very convenient compared to manual lookups. It can also be connected to your anki to automatically make cards by just clicking one button, after you set up the template. Screenshots and audio may still need a manual touch though I guess, unfortunately. I do have mine automatically pulling audio for most words from online recordings, but that’s a little different. Still, highly recommend.
I’d also maybe look into Agent, it’s another texthooker. It works in part by loading up scripts so what it works on is directly limited (but always growing) to the list of games within it, but the flipside is that it’s super easy to use for any game it works on and will work for some things textractor can’t do.
I’m tempted to make an informal club post for 13 sentinels, mostly because I’m already playing it and want somewhere to talk about it. I don’t think it would make a great formal club since the game is… aggressively non-linear once you pass the prologue with 2.5 modes (the VN, the RTT, and the choosable unlockable journal entries), and it’s a time travel anime, so even within the routes you have to pick between 13 characters, who have loops and forks internally.
Basically, the flowchart of paths would end up looking like this:
(Also your choice of platform is… PS4 or switch. On the plus side, it’s fully voiced, all scenes are pausable or replayable, there’s a journal with replayable audio for everything, including the in-combat voiceovers from the real time tactics side.)
So I think it would be a more read at your own place with spoiler tags for like “Character Name - Scene Name”
It’s a fun game; I played in English a little while back, I bet it’d be very cool to talk about with others. Too soon for a replay for me to join or anything, but I hope this gets off the ground!
I just played through the tutorial of 13 sentinels. Pretty interesting so far. Language seems to be doable. Though it was a bit of a shock until I turned auto advance off. Obviously I don’t really get everything, but it’s a mystery game, so that’s as it should be.
I just wish some of the text during battles were in a different font, I can’t make out the descriptions for the attacks at all.
So, I’ve been to Japan recently and visited Ako (赤穂市) along the way.
Ako is historically famous for salt and the 47 ronin who avenged lord Asano.
As a preparation I had read the visual novel Chushingura 46+1 (it’s actually pretty good reading and historically accurate… except for the samurai being mostly women) and also watched the movie Chūshingura: Hana no Maki, Yuki no Maki (1962) to fact check everything.
My deep knowledge of the topic impressed the locals when buying omiyage haha.
I thought I’d share comparison between in-game screenshots (2013) and the place today (2025):
I’m in the middle of trying to migrate to a new computer, and I’m at the dreaded step of moving my Umineko setup over, so I’m reinstalling all of the programs, and I had a couple questions:
Is there a way to transfer your data off of Texthooker (themoeway one) to another browser?
I saw that themoeway guide itself now recommends Texthooker UI (the renji-xd one). Can you transfer data from the old texthooker page to this new site? It looks like there is some sort of import/export mechanism, but I don’t really understand how it works…
As far as my own setup goes, I have everything reinstalled and the VN is texthooking successfully, but only on the renji-xd page, and for whatever reason, themoeway texthooker isn’t automatically pulling the text even though I have Lap Clipboard Inserter installed and it does put whatever I manually copy in there (it will even add the extracted lines from the VN if I highlight them in Textractor, but won’t add them automatically). So it looks like I’ll be forced to migrate to the new site anyway, haha.
If possible, I’d like to keep my old data, so any help anyone can give would be appreciated
EDIT: Never mind on the last issue; I figured it out myself: the old texthooker needs the Copy to Clipboard extension enabled (the renji-xd one won’t work if it’s enabled). So I guess my main question then is just how to transfer the data from my firefox browser on my old computer to the firefox browser on my new one.
