Visual Novel Book Club

Yeah, I haven’t seen the Higu anime but it sounds very similar. It was really weird watching the anime after reading the VN and seeing so many scenes cut out that brought life to the characters. Not to mention many other changes like the art style being worse in general, changes to the OST, etc. I love the VN but I could never recommend the anime to anyone.

I do think you’ll like S;G once you get farther in. It’s kind of a slow start from what I remember but it gets really good. I really like the sci;adv series in general although I haven’t read a couple of the newest ones yet.

and now they have an alternate version of the VN supplanting it as an anime copy :skull:

Stayed away from that cause it seems people pretty unilaterally say it’s worse, but I have a friend who recently told me they’re going to read the VN but will only read that version because of their attachment to the anime sooo

Characters are overly done, but I eventually find amusing. Story progression is quite good, I think. I started with JP version of VN and didn’t watch anime, and I find option controls confusing.

I am considering C;H but no promising.

I have been thinking about this Visual Novel Book Club a bit the last few days. I started Island together with the book club in March. It was my first VN and I was completely hooked. I loved the format of the club and how we could read together and speculate about what what happening together.

Now some are done with Island and have moved on to other VNs and others (like me) are still reading, but we are in different places in the VN and it’s hard to discuss it. I also started an informal book club for Everlasting Flowers. The same happened there - some read through the VN very fast and are done by now, others, like me, are still slowly reading through it. It’s hard to discuss what happens when we are in different places in the VN and what one person wants to discuss is a spoiler for the other person.

I guess what I would like is a shorter book club with a clear structure, like the Loopers club. One week, one chapter, slowly reading through the VN together and discussing the same parts of the VN together.

There are a few shorter VNs on the current proposal list and we could probably find a few more if needed. Maybe look for VNs with clear chapters so we could read one chapter or one scene per week together.

キラキラモンスターズ from the current proposal list looks promising. 10 chapters, VNDB play time of about 6 hours. マルコと銀河竜 is another one with a play time of about 6 hours. I could also suggest Christmas Tina (not proposed here, but read by the VN book club at Natively). I’m sure we could find other short VNs too.

I guess what I would like to know is if anyone wants to participate in a shorter book club, about 10 weeks or so, with a structure where we read the same chapter or scenes together and discuss them together before moving on to the next part? I’ll put up a poll in a moment.

Would you like to participate in a short (about 5-10 weeks) structured book club, where we read one section/chapter/scene/part per week and discuss that part before moving on to the next one?

  • Yes, absolutely!
  • No, I prefer to read on my own

Hi. I’m new here. I was summoned from the natively forum in order to read the Flowers VN.

Can someone explain the meaning and purpose of the difficulty/effort poll to me?

And what is the status of this club? Ace Attorney won the last poll, but the club is on indefinite hiatus?

Do you accept nominations, or only at specific times?

In case you missed it, マルコと銀河竜 also had a club on Natively. I personally would not reread it, though.

I’ve also read Christmas Tina before (before the Natively club). I could imagine rereading it, but I don’t think I will. This game also has a lot of DLC (mostly with fresh characters). I don’t think the Natively club read that.

I think we could also look at the previous picks. I don’t see your participation vote for 徒花異譚 and that’s a short VN I would be interested in.

fault - milestone one is short. But AFAIK it’s part of a series (and I’m not sure it’s finished). So I wouldn’t be interested unless it works very well on its own.

I’d be interested in キラキラモンスターズ.

I think it should be possible to be possible to just reuse an old club from here or natively, simply add a new schedule. Unless that’s bad manners for some reason?

I suggest that if you are still interested in running this, just start a poll with any of the games you would want to read.

I also have Tsuyuchiru Letter ~Umi to Shiori ni Amaoto o~ on my list. That one is also short and kinetic. Not sure if it’s divided into chapters. That one was recommended to me by @AzusaChan on Natively.

Also worth noting that despite having a schedule and being quite short, the threads had virtually no participation after the second week

Not sure about Natively, but it’s OK reuse an old club in Book Clubs (i.e. necro). Threads were extended to close after 10 years (though not sure why this one says 8 years). Some media may have rerun club, that is, a newer one, but not a VN so far.

徒花異譚 particularly doesn’t feel that old.

Maybe informal unscheduled clubs could work for longer or non-linear VNs / games? Like Discourse thread for each grammar point (though may work better with Natively? (not yet a feature))

Ace Attorney won the last poll but the amount of people that voted was really small so we decided to take a hiatus. We did do an informal club instead recently for Everlasting Flowers.

Nominations are okay at any time.

Its been a while since I read it but I don’t think there are any chapters in it. The VN is really short but its a fun read.

I just put up a thread for a structured club for Kirakira Monstars here. The VN has 10 stories and we’ll start on Monday October 7th and be finished by the middle of December.

Maybe we can have a new round of nominations in December and a new round of the official VN book club in January? Or another informal club?

I saw Chaos;Head Noah in Steam, but not Chaos;Head. There is Chaos;Child, though.

Noah is kind of an updated version of Chaos;Head and is what I played, not a spin-off the way some of the other sci;adv games are. It’s the way to experience C;H, but there is apparently some cut content so it’s worth installing a mod to restore it.

Steins;Gate Reboot just got announced. Looks like there will be some new story additions + updated art. I thought the original was already complete as is, not really sure how they plan on adding in more story to that but we’ll see. I played the original like a decade ago so this might be a good excuse to revisit it.
