Curious to know what is the issue with Textractor? I was away for a week and didn’t use it, but now I’m back and just tried and it seems to work as usual

The same thing happened to me. I uninstalled everything (the textractor and the VN) from my laptop and reinstalled them, and it worked fine after that lol. I’m not sure why it stopped working all of a sudden though.

The only thing I remember doing was moving the textractor file from my system to my onedrive, and maybe that’s why it didn’t work? I’m not sure. But if you have the patience for it, maybe try reinstalling?

I use Textractor on two computers, and it developed different issues on each one, lol. On my secondary computer at my parents’ place (where I’m spending a lot of time lately to help them with stuff they can’t do anymore because of their advanced age), it’s just very unstable. I usually need several tries to get a working hook, and it often freezes and has to be kicked and restarted after only 10-20 lines, just when I’m getting into the story. On my main computer in my own apartment, the auto translate feature stopped working last week and instead, Google Translate spammed the text window with complaints that my translation requests were against their terms of service. Thanks to your help, I managed to turn it off, but since it’s so unstable on my other computer, that also made me want to look for alternatives.

Right now, I’m back home and managed to get Lunahook running here, so I’m just going to try it out for awhile.

@prath , @TobiasW ,@rikaiwisdom: Thanks to anyone who offered help and suggestions. I’m going to try them out next weekend, when I’m back at my other computer.

Ouch okay, seems like a tough issue.
In case it can make a difference, with the issue on your parents’ computer, once I had an issue with it not finding my search text anymore. I got it solved by changing in the parameters the speed at which the text was printing, by putting a lower speed, it seemed like Textractor was able to hook to it better.
Good luck and good luck with helping your parents, sounds tough going back and forth between two places!

Since we usually start voting 6 weeks ahead of time maybe its a good idea to start doing nominations for anyone that is interested and then do voting starting on the 21st? The end of voting should line up well with the steam summer sale too.

This might be a weird nomination since the VN isn’t out yet but I plan on reading it on release so figured I’d add it here in case there is interest.

Everlasting Flowers - Where there is a will, there is a way

Developer: sprite
VNDB Play Time: Unknown
VNDB Link: everlasting flowers | vndb
Character count: Unknown.
Number of weeks to finish: This is from the steam page:
To meet the needs of the modern player, who often doesn't have the time to play a long work, these stories are condensed into a short, movie-like experience, their quality enhanced by a large number of illustrations and high production values.

So with that information, I would estimate this VN won’t be any longer than 200k characters but its hard to say. So for now, I’ll do a conservative estimate of 8-10 weeks to finish this.

Summary

Sakashita Mina finds herself in a new town attending a famous all-girls high school. A misfit among a class of young, affluent ladies, she soon stops attending, realizing she’ll never make any friends. In the year since, she has barely left her room.

Time passes slowly, each day a suffocating eternity. Mina would stare at the dried flowers in her room, trying to convince herself that this space is the only place in the world where she belongs.

Seino Ran is a child of a wealthy family and has lived the life her parents laid out for her. That is, until she realizes that nobody truly cares about her. With that in mind, her happy life begins to fall apart.

These circumstances lead both girls to apply for a live-in job at a seaside lodge. Here they meet, and the two girls end up spending the summer together and healing their wounded hearts. They found someone they could trust in each other, something they never thought they’d find again.

Spending her days together with Ran and the owners of the lodge, Yanase Michiko and Naruse Himari, Mina starts to wish that she could remain there forever. However, Ran’s friend, Tachibana Sanami, gives Mina a reality check—it’s high time she faces her problems.

Mina is convinced that nobody likes her. She avoids speaking her mind, she avoids school, and she avoids everyone she once considered friends. And while facing those problem will be tough, she also doesn’t want to go back to that room and go back to being her old self.

As the time they have left at the lodge dwindles, Mina desperately searches for a place where she can belong. As for Ran…

Availability

Steam: Everlasting Flowers - Where there is a will, there is a way on Steam
Switch: everlasting flowers (Multi-Language) for Nintendo Switch
Playstation: everlasting flowers (Multi-Language) for PlayStation 4
I assume it will be available digitally on switch/psn at release.

Personal Opinion

Sprite is a very well-regarded developer so I have high hopes for this game. The art and presentation look beautiful as well. I think this will end up being one of the best VNs from this year.

Pros and Cons for the Book Club

Pros

  • All the characters are voiced
  • High amount of CGs
  • OST seems really good based on previews
  • Available on all major platforms so everyone should be able to join if interested

Cons

  • The game isn’t out so can’t verify hooking capabilities etc but from what I’ve read online, there hasn’t been issues hooking other games from this dev
  • The game doesn’t come out until August 29th so we’d have to start a few weeks later than we normally would

I took the screenshots with text from a youtube video (I’ll link below) so excuse the poor quality

Personal Opinion

The original Ace Attorney, a great game and great entry to this series, widely available in terms of platforms and languages which means many of us are already familiar with it. The entire script of the game is available online for ease of look-ups regardless of platform as well as easy to plan divisions and character counts. Also available on jpdb.io. Not being a pure VN, the trial portions serve as a test for comprehension. It’s basically the perfect beginner-friendly game to ease people into VNs but also appeal to the veterans with some more difficult to understand bits from the eccentric characters.

Pros and Cons for the Book Club

Pros

  • Full script available online and deck available on jpdb.io
  • Wide platform availability
  • It’s not too long so it can be followed at a more beginner-friendly pace
  • Trials gradually progress in difficulty and length
  • A diverse cast with incredibly varied forms of speech
  • Interesting story and memorable characters

Cons

  • No voice acting
  • If you have played it already it might not be as interesting

Time to start voting  4 votes as usual. Is anyone able to change the thread title to reflect that we are voting?

Three days left to vote but so far we only have 4 voters. We didn’t have too many voters last time either but seems like we’ll have even less this time. Maybe we should put the club on a temporary hiatus until there is more interest again?

I’m not voting because I have too many things I already want to read at the moment. Hiatus sounds good to me, maybe in the future I will have more time to join!
Another thing that maybe could help could be to advertise more the club? Post in different threads / on the Natively forum

I didn’t vote because I probably won’t quite be able to finish the current VN until the next one starts, and I’d like to take a break before the next one to catch up on other reading. So a hiatus would work in my favor, too.

Yeah that’s true. I don’t post too much on here overall so I feel like it’d be bad etiquette from me if I started advertising in other threads but also whenever we make a post in here, it brings the thread to the top of the forum so I figured people would see it that way? But maybe people are using the forums in a different way than I am

Natively has its own VN club with a different structure than ours but last time I checked, it seemed like their activity was even lower than ours. I think a lot of people on the natively forums are also on here so I think the structure we have here probably doesn’t work for the people who participate in the natively one.

I am fine with a hiatus though since there is a lot of VNs that aren’t quite suited for here that I wanted to catch up on too.

We have a couple of informal VN clubs running now too. There aren’t that many VN readers here, and with the informal clubs, maybe there isn’t room for this club. I don’t know.

I voted for a couple of the short VNs for this reason. I would like to take a break after I finish Island, or at least do a short VN before starting a long one again.

Or maybe start an informal club for the short VNs?

I am fine with participating in discussion for ones I have finished, but not really replaying them (Ace Attorney 1, ATRI). And I don’t want to play anything specifically in the nomination choices.

Perhaps ヒラヒラヒヒル that I am playing now can be nominated later. Or, I am OK with replaying STEINS;GATE. But then, not sure of the participants and pace, and text hooking.

Yeah I’ve thought rejoining sometime would be nice but I’ve gotten myself in the middle of a lot of things so I’m unsure about adding more (reading chaos;head, Umineko getting off the ground, playing games like SMT5 Vengeance on the side, some stuff I’m watching in JP, etc…), and just kinda perpetually feeling harder to motivate myself towards things I’m not directly choosing as what I want to read most right now when I’m so slow at everything, despite how much I like having the club alongside. I’d also like to be able to join for the Trails in the Sky thing happening soon on the forums, but who knows… :skull:

I still spent a bit considering voting but the very low vote count meant I’d have a really outsized impact which I didn’t like considering my questionable level of commitment to seeing it through. Also at least if Ace Attorney 1 wins I know I’m out because I’ve read it too many times at this point and even when I was earlier in learning Japanese it was the first VN/game I practiced with. It’s way too soon for me to be doing it again.

Vote closed. 3 votes for Ace Attorney, 1 or 0 votes for everything else. Many votes for hiatus. What to do?

How about starting Ace Attorney around September 1st, to give everyone a break before starting a new VN? Could that work?

I am fine with whatever the rest of the club members decide on. I will be skipping the next VN though, I’ve tried to read Ace Attorney a few times before (although in English) and the series isn’t for me

Even though it’s my nomination, I feel like with 3 votes it’s not really a solid win, so if in a couple of months there are more people interested in reading VNs it might be better to vote again then

I need a longish hiatus, but wouldn’t mind skipping Ace Attorney, so if there are enough people who are interested in it, go ahead.

One month later… What do you think about the book club now? Do you need a longer hiatus?

I kind of want to start reading a new VN on September 1st. That should give us some time to wrap up what we’re currently reading. Would any of you like to start a new book club VN on September 1st?
