Typing in Japanese with IME

Hi guys,

I’ve recently starting using the Japanese IME input on Windows but having a bit of trouble when trying to enter Hiragana only (for readings) it automatically tried to convert to a Kanji. Is there a setting for allowing just free type of Hiragana?

Thanks!!

If you don’t hit spacebar it won’t convert to kanji. With that said, for the Microsoft IME at least you can hit F6 after you’ve typed to force hiragana and F7 to force katakana. There may be more efficient ways, but that’s what I know.

By the way, since it looks like you’re talking about when you do WaniKani reviews, you shouldn’t use an IME for that. WaniKani will automatically convert romaji to hiragana (or katakana if you use capital letters).

Thanks that works to keep as Hiragana only but the kana will be underlined once I am finished and if I type anymore kana anywhere else it reverts back to where I originally was and overwrites that kana

Any suggestions??

Thanks

Just worked it out…need to hit Enter…lol

I do have a question related to this, though. When doing Kamesame, or just using IME in general, sometimes either the Kanji I want will never show up, or the order will never be efficient, for instance, always giving me Jukugo instead of the single Kanji first. Is there a way to configure IME such that I can get the order closer to what I intend, or maybe just simpler->complex?

I don’t use Kamesame, but if you’re referring to single kanij reviews, that’s not that surprising. The IME is designed to give you words that are actually used, so in cases where a kanji by itself isn’t a word or is rare, it will be low on the list (if there at all), especially if it’s a common reading.

I see. Truthfully, I don’t really know what’s common and what isn’t, but I expected Two and Mountain to be at least somewhat common by themselves, and both either don’t show up or just do way down the line. I didn’t want to have to get a compound and then delete what I don’t need. Three is a good example, where San just simply doesn’t give me anything, so I end up going for Mittsu.

Thanks for the info.

I get 三 first when I type さん. And I get 二 first when I type に. For 山, さん does give that but far down the list (not surprisingly, since its reading as a standalone word is やま). No idea what’s going on for you.

Just to check, are you using spacebar or tab? They show up pretty early if I press spacebar, but if I use the list you get with the tab key they’re further down the list instead, so I figured I’d check.

Could it be that it adjusts itself after some use?

I’ve also just noticed that it does give me different results if I’m using it on Kamesame/WaniKani Forums or on Google for example. Still doesn’t give me the single Kanji first, but it’s a whole different set.

San did give me the mountain at some point, but Yama only gives me compounds.

Oh god damn it, the space bar actually does it. I had no idea they were different sets.

Thank you.

In my experience with Microsoft’s IME (or at least the Windows 7 version), there’s at least a little learning of your habits that goes on, kind of like how predictive text on a phone starts suggesting different words higher on the list if you use them more frequently.
