That’s a lot :eyes:

About a month ago, I wrote an email suggesting a mnemonic change for 言葉つき:
For the word 言葉つき, the current mnemonic references the moon (つき) to remember the term. This could be a bit misleading since つき in this context relates more to ‘attach’ rather than the moon (6% of literary mentions write it as 言葉付き: 言葉つき – Vocabulary details – jpdb). I thought a revised mnemonic might be more fitting:

“Remember how 言葉 means “language?” When you ‘attach’ (付き) something to your words, you’re not just speaking plainly; you’re paying extra attention to your speech and wording. It’s like attaching a special label to each word, making your speech more thoughtful and deliberate.”

This mnemonic is both easier to understand and more truthful to the original meaning of 言葉つき.

Granted, I’m not sure if i’m misunderstanding anything? If not, I feel it’d really benefit from a mnemonic change! :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a bug related to this update! I am on level 3 and cannot unlock the kanji for north because I haven’t learned the ice radical yet, which isn’t taught by level 3 @mamimumason

Oh no, thank you for letting us know. I’ll talk to the team member about this. Thank you!

Thanks for letting us know @sevensen! We’ve now moved the “ice” radical down to level 3, so that should fix this.

Is there a reason why thickheadedness was added to the warning list for 鈍感? Curious, as if you look 鈍感 up in a dictionary, thickheaded is the primary meaning that comes up.

Also confused, as the meaning explanation on Wanikani right now is “ 鈍感 often means someone’s not very tuned in to emotions or what’s happening around them. It’s like they can miss subtle romantic hints or not sense the silent tension in a room.” In English, that sounds like someone who is a bit thickheaded because they’re not picking up on social cues, no?

Or, if we link it back to the meaning explanation above, I think when I hear the word “insensitive” it implies more that the person noticed the romantic hints or the silent tension in the room, but chose to ignore it because they don’t care. Where as being thickheaded implies that they didn’t notice at all.

Thank you @Kaarssteun san! We greatly appreciate your thoughtful suggestion, and it’s been on our to-do list. Hopefully, we can implement it soon. Apologies for being slow.

Hello @nminer san! Thank you for raising this question. Oxford American dictionary defines “thickheaded” as “unintelligent” or “stupid,” which we felt didn’t precisely capture the nuances of 鈍感. However, I’ve just checked Merriam Webster, and it does define “thickheaded” as “sluggish and obtuse of mind,” which aligns very well with the nuance of 鈍感. Consequently, I have moved “thickheaded” to the alternative meaning and moved “thickheadedness” to the allowed list (as it’s often used for 鈍感さ rather than just 鈍感). We did have a native English speaker review this, but your observation wasn’t caught. We apologize for any confusion and thank you for bringing it to our attention.
