There’s so much vocabulary left in the previous lesson. Should I just trust the order WaniKani feeds the lessons to me? Or should I use “Advanced” to learn all of the previous lesson’s vocabulary first?
Uncheck Interleave Lessons, that should give you lessons in the same order they’re listed (so the level 17 vocab before the level 18 radicals)
Up to you! I always do advanced and select all radicals for the new level, do that batch, then advanced again for the new kanji, and then do the vocabulary for the previous level so that I can keep moving forward, but not be bogged down by the vocabulary first. This is for speed though, if you want to retain it better, probably doing the previous lesson’s vocabulary first (using the advanced select all or unchecking interleave lesseons) will keep the kanji meanings more fresh in your mind
My question is less how to do that, and more what to do.
If I just go to the homepage and click “Start Lessons” it’ll automatically give me a mix of vocab and the new level’s kanji. Four vocab and one kanji. Is that, the default way, the best way?
Or is it better to force all of the vocab first by doing what you just suggested?
If you’re not speed-running, I think the default selections will work fine.
I think either way’s fine, it’s just up to personal preference.
I guess a good way to look at is, are you ready to learn new kanji yet, or do you still need to focus on the last level’s kanji by learning vocab? If you’re ready to learn new kanji, do the mix of vocab and kanji. If not, force all vocab first.
I just want to do lessons without thinking to be honest. That’s why I’m here using WaniKani. I want someone else to decide what I need to do. I just want to follow directions until I know kanji, lol.
Then I think it should be good to just follow the default order set by WK
If your priority is learning vocabulary, learn the vocabulary first. If your priority is kanji or leveling up faster, do the lessons it automatically gives you.
You’re right about where it started taking me 2-3x as long to finish levels. To speed back up, I switched to the strategy superelf94 laid out above, but that also leads to me having to really stay on top of reviews. At a minimum, I’d recommend doing radicals as soon as they come available, since they’re very quick to learn and review, and it starts the clock on any locked kanji.
