The "news reading" challenge 🗞

I didnt know this https://japanese.todaiinews.com/ website.

For sure now I will use it over nhk easy news to increase my vocab a little more.

Yeah, it is great, though NHK Easy News have the advantage of being voiced by real people trunky_rolling

I’m taking a different approach to this. I’m plugging the news article from Todai into https://osaka.uda2.com/ and after reading it there, playing the audio along to the Kansai-ben version (to help further map Tokyo-ben->Kansai-ben in my head). I really wish there were a de-keigo-ifier site/app, to get the most out of it - since a lot of Kansai 語尾 don’t work with です・ます, and it’s not how you’d ordinarily speak (except in formal contexts)

This one was missing a paragraph or so of text at the end, which the audio had

クソ野郎ども (the people at Amazon who made these decisions)

Pretty interesting and exciting if this sorta thing proves to be viable in general! (which rn seems iffy)

Aack!!
The ads on Todai drive me crazy!!

Also me. A lot of the articles are almost identical to やさしい朝日新聞 though, so you can get them there without popups

This is what ad blockers are for. uBlock Origin is a good one. On mobile I have a browser called Adblock Browser. Works like a charm

Yeah, I finally started to use ad blockers earlier this year and my Internet experience has improved dramatically since then. Never going back.

Nice one, thanks, I have uBlock on pc but hadn’t looked for a mobile solution

I can’t sleep so turned to the news

My good friend who otherwise shows no interest in baseball dropped everything for the series final last week. It turns out baseball terms are important for understanding Japanese  This article is nice as it explains the otherwise cryptic セ・リーグ and パ・リーグ at the end

阪神 はんしん as far as I understand from Japanese internet is the greater 大阪 + 神戸 area. I think I’ve come across it before, maybe it will stick now

I tried that on Firefox for Android smartphone. I forgot to install the extension on my new phone, and it matters!

(I also tried AdGuard today, and it works too. I haven’t used this one before, so I get back to what I used to use.)

Ads really block the small mobile screen. Matters a lot for some websites.

Todai comes with quizzes, though 3 articles per day limit.

I’ve almost entirely avoided them for 4 years and been fine. Ex: I’ve never seen the cryptic words you’re referring to

Sure does. See also ラブ★コン | L25 (where the leads are nicknamed オール阪神・巨人, after a popular comedy duo of the same name)

I have a tall screen, but some of them are really ridiculous

The quizzes were a bit buggy on mobile app - or maybe I just misunderstood something.

I got the lifetime membership a few years ago, when I was first trying to read news regularly. So no limitations (or ads I think?). Idrc the price, but thought it was reasonable at the time

I meant that a bit tongue in cheek actually, just referring to the constant threads asking wk why so many baseball terms are in the program, so when it turned out my friend could get so obsessed with the final suddenly it made me laugh internally and check out an article

Interesting  kind of
I mean I’m not surprised at all

It’s been a minute, but… 今日のやつ:

On first listen, it was like “what are all these sounds”… then next listen w/ text was like “ohhh ok, I see now”… then I started going through it paragraph by paragraph, but I was super hungry, so I stopped midway - but think I got the gyst at this point.

Anyway this all reminds me of back when I used to do Satori Reader (which does have a News section btw, for folks looking for something on the easier side)… guess similar approach - plus adding words to a deck (that I’ll probly never actually look at, but still)

What a rice article

I caught enough of it on a first go (text + audio). Tbh the synthesized audio voice is a bit hard to parse (good listening practice, in an odd way). Did add a few words to a deck. Will probably give a read without audio later, but not in the mood rn

I have a super basic 炊飯器 and occasionally think I should get a slightly fancier one. More pressing stuff like books to put money towards rn tho
