Red pandas were discovered first! They were just called pandas! Then Europeans discovered the Chinese animal, went “ooo, these look just like pandas”, even though they’re not at all related, so they got called “giant panda”! And the panda got relegated to “lesser panda”! But the red panda is most definitely the greater panda!

There are two sub-species of red panda - the Himalayan red panda and the Chinese red panda - but otherwise they’re the only species in their genus. No close relatives at all. They might be distantly related to bears, or maybe weasels, but biologists haven’t really settled on anything yet. But yes, “panda” comes from the Nepalese name for this animal - the Chinese name for the giant panda was 熊猫 = xiongmao, but it was given a different name in English 'cos that’s what English does.
Fun fact: the Firefox browser is named for red pandas, though whoever designed the logo evidently didn’t get the memo.

Interestingly enough, somehow the app I’m using to read NHK Easy News managed to get not only today’s news, but also two of tomorrow’s news (one about how the best way to calm a crying baby is to hug them and walk carrying them for a while and the other about a panda becoming 30 years old). When I got to the NHK website, however, I can’t see those news – I guess they were made beforehand but not publicly available on the site yet and the app just somehow bypassed it…
Also, in today’s news:

On a more serious note, I’m very sorry the rainwater damaged the post office and very glad they managed to find a temporary solution.

No, it’s called (rather straightforwardly) NHK Easy Japanese News Reader.
It’s made by Aovill team.
I wouldn’t say it’s the best app for reading NHK Easy News (for one thing, the dictionary it uses – is weblio; I’d rather it was jisho.org, but I haven’t found any way to change it), but it is still quite convenient for reading on the phone. All the definitions are brought at the end of the page, so you don’t need to click on them; instead, clicking on highlighted items gives you translation (though again, it’s weblio and not jisho.org).
