I generally like the dashboard changes. They seem to be motivated by some of the newer competition WK has in the Japanese learning space. I am very, very happy to see that the site is getting some love from headquarters.
That said, I’m somewhat disappointed that they’ve dropped a ton of resources into this, but there is still no native support for something like the double-check userscript. And the lack of this feature seems to just be a nanny-state, we know better than you, we are going to treat you like a cheating child, attitude.
The reality in my case is that I mistype things all the time and have a habit of typing the answer while looking at the item, not the text entry window and then thinking in my head the correct answer, but that answer did not come out my fingers and habit makes me push the enter key too fast and then all hell breaks loose. It is really kind of insane that at this point in time an undo answer feature is not supported.
ALL other online Japanese learning tools seem to have this feature in one way or another. It is kind of mind boggling that WK continues to assert that they know better and refuses to add this.
Wow, I love this update! I like being able to move things I don’t use as much and I’m excited for the possibilities this brings. Seasonal widget themes would be adorable!
My feedback:
+1 to all the other people asking for hourly forecasts to be more visible. This was such a great tool to choose when to study for the day. Even if it was a large widget that had to have its own row, I really would like to be able to have it front and center.
Critical condition items had the % correct right where you could see it and arranged them by percentage. This meant I could see I had something at 33% correct and go “oh crap.” With the percentages hidden, I will never click to see them and won’t feel the shame the widget was there to give me to begin with. Maybe we could get an option to turn the critical condition widget into a list view that mimics what it was before?
Having used it now for a few days, I’ve trimmed mine down to get rid of nearly all the fluff. I do still think all of the useful info we used to have available at a glance needs to come back (but I have seen that’s a popular request and will hopefully become available before too long). As such this is how my dashboard has ended up:
The layout is largely too big, but ironically the Kanji (ie. the only important part of the app) are way too small now
The level progress widget (as seems to be a popular complaint) has gone from being useful to totally useless. Looking forward to a fix for that, in the meantime leaving it on the dashboard to pay respects to its former iteration
Please for the love of god align columns in widgets. Suggestion to make the cumulative total in the forecast widget bold instead is a good one.
Every other place in the app Kanji / Vocab appear are now too hard to use I only visit if I have to. Problem is detailed in the relevant thread in the feedback section. Biggest problem that actually leads to day-to-day is the visually similar kanji listing now being nigh-on impossible to read at a glance, which is a shame as its proved useful for fixing leeches up until now.
As a developer myself, I understand how much work this was and am looking forward to the fixes for the popular complaints. Maybe the takeaway for this is to setup a private and/or public beta first to gather actual user use-cases. In my experience updating popular apps, this leads to a far higher percentage of successful launches than otherwise.
But in principle it’s the same - the difference is that you want to have the burned items selection manual and for (me) it would be automatic… as you said - “philosophical”
It is very, very nice to have a heatmap that reflects mobile app, aka Smouldering Durtles, reviews back. The heatmap had been broken since the big refactor some good while back wherein WaniKani also broke the API (because presumably one of the API endpoints that @Kumirei used to retrieve the requisite data caused too heavy a load on WK’s database). So the heatmap only knew about your local browser’s reviews which was a real handicap. It’s good to see at least one heavily used userscript get merged into the native site.

It’s good to hear that some things are moving in a more user-oriented direction, only I didn’t get, do you mean you want something to happen on the more robust practice options front, or on the people choosing which Kanji they want to learn front, or both?
I would hope more customization in terms of users choosing what to learn for themselves is on the horizon as that would be amazing. Yes, better practice tools would be appreciated as well, but considering the Self-Study Quiz now covers most of that, I would rather see effort be put into something that can’t be fixed/improved by a userscript.
The more I advance into my language learning journey, the more I realize what WK offers (in terms of progression) is far from what personally suits me and my goals.
I’m sorry if it’s just a little insignificant detail and/or if it’s posted by someone else before (only managed to read until post 214…).
Could you consider making the radical progress bar blue (now grey) in case there are no radicals in the level? My brain wants it to be blue so it doesn’t think I missed something
On the new “Recent Mistakes” widget (which is very nice btw), could you add a link to open the item once you reveal the answer? In some cases we may want to look at extra meanings, the notes, or hear the audio. That would help. Thanks.

Maybe there could even be some premade filters like prioritising burned items with the worst statistics. Like how many times total you answered an item wrong before it getting burned. I think this could be neat in addition to being able to select items individually
I’d love to just have an unburn button available when reviewing burned items, so if I hit one I don’t know I can quickly throw it back into rotation. That doesn’t solve the general problem of “how to effectively review things outside of the main workflow”, of course, but it seems like a possible easy improvement to make.
Being able to review burned items prioritized by longest-ago-reviewed would be another possibly simple improvement – especially combined with a quick unburn button. I could then easily sit down and review my 50 or 100 or however many oldest items, and put ones that I’m fuzzy on back into circulation.
I’ve tried to like the new dashboard but everything takes more scrolls and clicks to get to. On my iPhone mini I can pretty much see a single widget at a time. This is terrible. I’m using this app to learn and plan my learning and this updates makes all of this information harder to get to. It’s objectively worse.
Who was even asking for this? This is just a kanji SRS app. How much customisation could we possibly need?
Edit: Scrolling through the thread, I can see people are posting screenshots of what are clearly desktop browsers. It looks good and it’s clear to see why they like it. On mobile, this update has no respect for space and easy access to information.
It’s majority dead space. Images I will never interact with. If you consider that I use this app hourly. The daily amounts of reviews is also useless to me. This is an update that was clearly tested on a 4K desktop monitor.
Looking forward to what more new fun stuff you and the team got in store for us! Even if it’s not super soon! I remember from earlier changes when you guys said you were cleaning up under the hood (and unfortunately some features were lost ), that it’s going to make it way easier for the team to add new stuff. And now I realize this is the start of it, it’s finally taking shape for us users. How exciting!

How to see the expected time for the next level when hovering the mouse over the character I have yet to “guru”. I used to see it old dashboard, but not in the new one. If there is any way to see it, please tell me.
I didn’t say I wouldn’t interact with the widgets, but that I wouldn’t interact with the images making up the dead space. Have a look at that picture and how much of that is useful content? A third of it? The rest is completely useless. I was perfectly happy with the functions before the update.
Even if it’s not super soon! I remember from earlier changes when you guys said you were cleaning up under the hood (and unfortunately some features were lost 
), that it’s going to make it way easier for the team to add new stuff. And now I realize this is the start of it, it’s finally taking shape for us users. How exciting!
