No, the S-pen uses Wacam’s digital pen technology and can do a few complex functions. The tablet/phone can pick up where you are pointing the S-Pen by just hovering over it, and show a cursor on screen as if you are using a mouse.
A fair few of the features can be done by using Samsungs side panels feature. AI Select (and Smart select before that) can OCR text, it’s just more awkward then when using an S-pen.
Oh, that looks really neat - and good to know that it works on images / manga as well as plain text.

There is a way that doesn’t involve fiddling with selection bars that lag and jump around!

There’s the issue that it’s hard for me to aim with my fat fingers and it’s not helped by the high refresh latency of the e-ink (I could really use a stylus for that, actually). It’s especially bad for Japanese due to the lack of spaces, you have to aim more accurately than in languages where you just have to target a word, like the video you posted. Also note that the person in the video has to try a few times to get their touch input to register correctly…
But on top of that the UI is horrendous. Since they removed all physical buttons (except power) on modern kindle, the touchscreen is used for everything, so you have to be very careful when selecting text to not make a gesture that will be interpreted as a page turn or an attempt to open the system tray thing.
Then even when you’re successful, the selection thing is extremely overloaded: sometimes it will create a new snippet, sometimes it will open the dictionary, sometimes it will open wikipedia and you have to faff around in the menu to get to what you want.
Then when you select translation sometimes it will fail to identify the correct source language, and it calls to Bing Translate under the hood I believe, which is hit or miss. It actually works okay-ish for Japanese, but it’s borderline unusable for Russian in my experience. I think the grammatical inflections really mess it up.
I guess the silver lining of all this frustration is that I’m not abusing the translation feature when I’m reading something in a foreign language…

I would also add it always creates a new highlight/note for me, which then needs to be reselected and “deleted”, adding even more wasted time.

wonderfully wellbetter than my previous method of selecting a word and attempting to expand the selection.
The trick I use for this is to long press on the word, and drag without lifting my finger. It’s still a dexterity check (one that I’ve gotten better at over time), but it’s much more straightforward than trying to adjust after the fact. The problem is sometimes kindle misinterprets where the regions are, and instead of parsing say にこだわった into に ことわった, it treats it as a single entity. Afaict there is nothing you can do in this situation.

I have selected words from the db file. It doesn’t seem to differentiate btwn selected vs highlighted (there is probably another table for that). I can make a guide for that later, if it’s useful.
Anyway the point of my previous question is: if you’re not using the highlights for anything, do you really need to remove them? If anything, leaving them in could be cool, if you ever wanna look back and see what you had to look up previously
FMA 2003 is my fav, But there are some pretty major differences vs the manga. If you’ve seen Brotherhood (the later anime adaptation), it’s very close to the manga apparently - and the plot is wildly different, the further in you get, for the reason you mentioned.
(I have not read the manga, but this is what I’ve read over the years, when looking at debates about which one was “better”)

My main wheelhouse of HARTA COMIX has some things on sale for fairly cheap, perhaps most notably (other than the already-mentioned intermediate manga club pick) all 5 volumes of 夜の名前を呼んで, a sentimental and magic-filled series for which there’s currently an ongoing beginner book club.
