The BookWalker Freebies Thread

To illustrate my point - there’s a two-day 50% pointback on Jump Comics right now

So that means Girl Meets Rock, Dandadan, Chainsawman etc all get 50% pointback in addition to the 20% off.

There’s some decent discounts on some good manga related to Monthly Afternoon, like Skip and Loafer, Heavenly Delusion, Land of the Lustrous, and American Manga Awards nominee The Darwin Incident. 4/17(木)23:59まで My already having one or two volumes of nearly all of these supports my long-lingering suspicion that free manga promotions have gotten less exciting over the years though, as I specifically remember Parasyte being an example of a well-known series that I once saw get free volumes fairly regularly but haven’t for a long time. But hey.

Yeah, I remember getting the first 3 volumes of Heavenly Delusions on 77 Yen sale back in the day (i.e. last year). In comparison, the current campaigns are kind of lame. Only thing of medium personal interest I’ve found is Saga of Tanya the Evil, first volume 110 Yen, some others at 30-50% off.

I’ve never been particularly interested in reading Chainsawman as I thought it would just be gore, but after finishing ルックバック I’m now wondering if that’s worth reconsidering. What is it comparable to? Asking mostly because I’m considering buying the entire series while it’s discounted with coin back, but that’s not ideal if I hate it

There’s gore, but it’s not really the point. It’s got really compelling human drama through the arc I’ve read (book 11), and the gore is mostly there in service to the storytelling.

It’s one of my favorite series and I’d 100% read it even if it didn’t improve my Japanese.

I have a friend who recently tried selling me on the premise and I think I want to try reading it sometime but I may do so by going to their house or piracy, it’s about devils who represent fears, so your main character is tied to the chainsaw devil and that’s why it’s named chainsaw man. The more feared something is, the more powerful its devil is and because these kill people, he’s involved with tracking down and hunting other devils. I don’t know how gory it gets but I know Power is a popular character from it because she’s kind of weak but very proud and full of herself. Umm, the main character, Denji, is a pretty normal guy, stock mc I guess. That’s about all I know from it.

I made this meme sometime last year when someone asked me about the series because I knew so little about the main character.

it’s gore with a point i guess would be the way to put it.

the worst part of isn’t really the blood and guts anyway, it’s much more about the psychological horror. there’s some truly amazing shit in the later volumes of the first part which has to do with the nature and medium of comic/manga storytelling that is nothing short of astounding.

funnily enough i will probably skip it on this iteration though as I’m angling for another boxset which I think goes on sale a lot less

I read the first volume (in Portuguese for some reason) and I didn’t particularly like it but it’s just not a type of shounen I enjoy. It’s fairly violent but there’s some humor/absurdity at play too. I feel like it’s the type of stuff I would have enjoyed as a teenager but feels rather vacuous to me now.

I suspect that reading the sample on bookwalker would be enough to decide if it’s for you. If you don’t enjoy that then don’t bother.

volume 9 spoilers

Are you talking about the part with all the names? I absolutely lost my mind for that. Like he could have drawn out every single death and it wouldn’t have even phased me, but somehow that really got me.

the specific section i’m thinking of is when

Summary

basically all the stuff when the chinese team get super effed up and sent to hell and the powers there are so fucking insane they start destroying parts of the manga. it’s incredibly creepy.

but yeah the bit with the names is also fucked.

@simias not pressing you to keep reading, just relaying my own experience: i think the manga took like almost 5-6 volumes to really hook me, which is a much easier price to pay in eng. i wouldn’t describe it as vaucous, though it gives that impression because denji (and I think power is in vol 1?) are complete knuckleheads; but it’s definitely hiding what is beneath an extremely bloody surface of grimdark grindhouse humour

Oh god, first @Belthazar and now you.

“I swear mate, you just have to read 6 volumes and then it gets good mate, it’s just the intro mate. You have to be patient mate, it’s like Harry Potter mate. Just read a thousand pages and then it’s really good after that I swear mate. Just 30 short chapters and we’re good to go mate.”

Life is short and there are billions of books to read, why would it be acceptable for mangas to waste our time and money thus?

it’s not a case of it was shit until then, it was just ‘good enough to keep reading’ and around vol 6 it became ‘holy shit i can’t stop reading’.

plenty of stories do this, it’s just a matter of the effort to return ratio. in eng the effort was basically nil and i had the time to kill. so what does it matter?

Fair enough, for me volume 1 was definitely not a case of “I’m curious to see where this is going”. I felt the same for Demon Slayer which was also very popular around the same time I think. I think in general I don’t really engage with these gritty/violent shounen manga, not my jam.

well to be fair demon slayer is a lot worse imho lol. now that is some basic-ass shonen

I hear it gets real good around volume 20. Trust.

nah, my partner loves the show so i’ve been sitting through most of it and it is always the exact same thing over and over again.

some of the char designs are good tho

also if i was calling anybody ‘mate’ that much you would instantly know i hated them

I used “bro” initially but then I think that both you and @Belthazar are australian so I thought I’d add some flavour.

More generally I think I’m just getting frustrated with how so many manga really pad stuff up to a ridiculous degree, probably in part because of perverse publishing incentives. As someone who grew up reading bande dessinées, it’s insane to think that you would need multiple volumes to get to the main plot when most BDs have a complete, self-contained story arc within double-digit pages.

Asterix goes to Egypt, has a full adventure there and comes back to eat boar within 48 pages. Meanwhile we’re on Volume 9 of Witch Hat Atelier and the last volume was mostly spent hyping up a festival B-plot that will apparently last for the next 2 or 3 volumes. Still no idea when the arc started in volume 1 will finally be resolved, they haven’t really brought that up lately.
