This is exactly what’s happening. And it treats the kanji as hanxi, so you get pinyin instead of romaji. Apparently if you have the Calibre interface in Japanese, then it does have the capability to use romaji instead but the Calibre author is err… opinionated and won’t make that an option of its own.

While I think it’s a bad decision, I fully support opinionated software.
And it’s open source, so I could always fork it and modif–oh, someone did.
I’ll have to try it out sometime.

this post is for when you don't have a physical kobo reader
I run both together (Calibre for windows + Kobo windows desktop app) in one Bottle inside Bottles without issues… Works perfectly… I also had to do some configs with it though. If you’re interested I can look into my specific setup later and post it here.

You have to set up your calibre inside bottles like you would with your calibre on windows, so installing the plugins and so on. There is probably a more elegant option with not having to run calibre inside bottles, but this was the quickest thing I landed on

There’s a bookshelf thing on the app, but I haven’t used it yet. I just sort the full library by “Date Read” to have the stuff I’m currently reading on top:
Bookwalker is cool but the software is very meh unfortunately.

The website can group books into volumes of the same series (シリーズをまとめて表示する) on top of whatever sorting.
The app would group by series only when it is ordered by series. I had to break the series grouping just to sort by order date.
The app has bookshelves, which has an option to group into series, on top of custom ordering.
The website has buttons to read in the app.
I can’t find bookshelves in the website today. I thought it existed before…
Oops I ran the script yesterday but I forgot to post it (while reflecting to myself about how I don’t forget this anymore).

While this sale is ending tomorrow, another one with time-limited free-to-reads is scheduled to start next Thursday (Jan 10th). The first 12 volumes of the LN and vol 1-4 of the manga will then be free to read until the end of January - details.
