šŸ’Ž The Beginner Final Fantasy Club (BFFC)

There’s a lot of optional stuff that you won’t read if you don’t bother to exhaustively visit every corner of the map, more so than in the previous games.

That’s a reason my pacing is a bit whack, because since I transcribe everything I take it all into account but realistically most players will skip most of that. I’m sure many of you still haven’t visited the village of the ancients since there’s no mandatory interaction there.

I’ve got FF4 about 1/3 transcribed and translated. Here’s the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pvky3o6Cj1OSNlLV51mrPbpAB1-BwvBCibekA9LcM0Y/edit?gid=2024634821#gid=2024634821

Can we say 20 weeks? Need to get my thief to level 98 first.

Deal, that’ll give me the opportunity to catch up on Nana

I have created the thread for FF4 here:

I was looking at FF8 on steam and saw a screenshot of Squall doing Renzokuken. FF8 was my first Final Fantasy game and I played it over 20 years ago, no Japanese knowledge at all. I always pronounced it ren-zo-KU-ken. I started thinking about what it could be derived from, but I’m so poisoned by English transliterations using short vowels even when they are long in Japanese that at first I tried looking up kanji with the reading ā€œzouā€. After a bit I realized that it’s clearly 連ē¶šå‰£. So straightforward, but I’m glad they didn’t try to translate in the English version. I think calling it ā€œconsecutive slashā€ or ā€œmultislashā€ would sound lame after FF7 had ā€œomnislashā€.

There’s also Odin’s 斬鉄剣zantetsuken that was left untranslated. There’s even the kanji displayed as part of the summon animation.

Somehow the English version of Kingdom Hearts also inherited Zantetsuken, which is weird because that series loves to localize things into brand new names (e.g. ć‚³ćƒ³ćƒœćƒŖćƒ¼ćƒ“ → Once More).

Just found this book club recently and decided to try and catch up from the beginning. Currently about to enter the Chaos Shrine in FFI. I might not be very active in the conversation but I wanted to take the time to thank everyone who contributed resources for this. It’s really helping the learning process go smoothly. Hopefully I’ll catch up to you guys before FFXVII comes out. lol

Nice! Don’t hesitate do share your impressions in the various threads as you make it through the game, I and I’m sure many others would enjoy reading it.

Welcome! We’re all grumbling about FF3 right now so it’d be a breath of fresh air if you got us talking about FF1 again for a bit.

Thanks. I’ll go ahead and post as I go through them then. I have a pretty extensive history with the FF series. I’ve played all the mainline titles in English at least once, including sequels, prequels and the MMOs. I’ve played a fair number of spinoffs as well. This will be my first attempt playing in Japanese.

My familiarity has definitely been helping so far. Even though there were quite a few words I didn’t know, I was able to get the gist of what most of the Cornelia NPCs were saying using my memories to fill in my knowledge gaps. I also didn’t need to learn any of the game mechanics since I knew those already. Talking to all the NPCs, gearing up, leveling up to 3 and making the trek to the Chaos Shrine took me 50 minutes according to the ingame clock. Feeling pretty good so far.

We keep track of who’s played which games in this post. It’s a wiki post so anyone can edit it. I think you’d be the most prolific of any of us!

I just added myself into the list. Of the games that are listed, I’ve beaten all of them at least once. lol I’m not really surprised I’m the only XI player but it does feel a bit lonely.

Damn that’s impressive
Looking forward to having the same line in the Japanese table!

Haha thanks. I’ve been playing Final Fantasy for well over 20 years at this point. Hopefully it doesn’t take me that long to do it again in Japanese.

As the FF3 club is reaching its end this weekend, I have posted a poll for the FF4 club start date:

And a second FF4 start date poll based on feedback from the first one:

In honor of the final week of the FF3 club, Squeenix have announced the last leg of their FF7 remake, featuring a job system!

See you on the 27th for the start of FF4!
