Swapping Out 2011年 for the Current Year?

2011年 always makes me do a double take when it comes up as a vocabulary word. Could it be swapped out for the current year? It would be dual-purpose, really:

  1. Teaches people how to pronounce the current year
  2. Makes WK feel current

2011年 is obviously an easy word and leaving it “as is” would be fine, but I can’t help but think this every time it comes up.

I always think this was the year tofugu started or something. Never actually checked, though.

It’s a reminder that there was a world before the pandemic

I kinda like it. It helps with number practice since you’re naturally going to want to say the current year so you have to figure out the number system for both にせんじゅういち and にせんにじゅう. And the latter feels almost too easy after the former.

I’m kinda glad it’s not something like せんきゅうひゃくきゅうじゅうきゅう

I think it’s a important year in Japan, after all it’s the year of Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami!

Fixed that for you.

I went back and forth on that and wasn’t sure.
