🎙 ✍ Speak/Write Every Day Challenge (Spring 2024) 🌸🌼

Welcome to the “Speak/Write Every Day Challenge” (Spring 2024) :cherry_blossom: :blossom:

I’m starting this challenge because I always avoid speaking. I love to read and write, but somehow my room is always silent. Even though I enjoy writing, I usually never go beyond what’s in my current grammar lesson. I want to create a space where people can express and challenge themselves with written and spoken output. Let’s make this a fun place to encourage each other and learn.

The Challenge will run from March 10th to April 30th. Please feel free to join at any time, or participate as you are able. The challenge may be extended.

The goal is to work on your spoken and written output, but feel free to tailor it to your own needs.

Your can:

  • Share your written or spoken work, or just follow or participate in the discussions
  • Express yourself with written work (pen and paper) or type
  • Share you progress with tutors or classes or any other sources of study
  • Record your progress for yourself
  • Use it as a way to motivate and challenge yourself to be accountable

You can write or speak about anything you like. You can share your day, talk about your hobbies, make up a story, shadow-read, or read an article out loud. You can have a conversation with your tutor, friend or guinea pigs. Do whatever interests and motivates you.

Feel free to speak or write as little or much as you want. The idea is to challenge yourself to be consistent.

Recording or sharing isn’t required for the challenge, but if you would like to, these resources were listed by @softlyraining Please let me know if anything needs to be updated or you would like to add anything to the list.

I’m starting with my guinea pigs, Gandalf and Dumbledore, so it’s all good

Thanks for continuing the Challenge.

I plan to write or scribble in Hobonichi or other notebooks for the remaining of March. April is a lie, I can’t promise for that, during the period of other challenges. (My Hobonichi is currently almost empty. I wasted it.)

I wonder if there is a good place to share scribbles. I could share S-pen written notes.

I would love for you to share :cherry_blossom: Also, I’d love to know what a hobonichi is

I’m doing this kinda involuntarily even if it’s just as simple 支払いはスイカで or 袋は大丈夫です.

But from yesterday I’ve challenged myself to speak more at work on work topics. In really my speaking ability is about the same level as the English speaking level of my Japanese colleagues.

Explained some scripts to a coworker yesterday as best as I could using some english terms for tech lingo I did not know in Japanese. He seemed to understand everything in the end

At lunch was chatting to another coworker about our travel experience and interesting places to see in Japan. When it comes to casual conversation I’m already fairly fluent.

My goal is it improve work related speaking.

That’s so cute  I’m sure they love hearing what you have to say

Hobonichi is the brand of a diary / notebooks. You can find them by googling it.

Honestly, these names are just brilliant for guinea pigs :joy: I’m not sure if you know that, but we have two guinea pigs, too!

Anyway, I’m 100% joining the challenge, because I need some motivational help :upside_down_face: Thanks a lot for creating it!

Also, I saw that in one of the previous challenges, they included a table of the participants. Not sure if you wanna do that, too, but since @hotdogsuplex has the first reply and is a regular, perhaps we could convince him to make his post a wiki, in case you want to include such a table as well?

Sounds great if they’re able

It’s been awhile since I participated in any challenges, but speaking a little bit every day for a couple months sounds both easily manageable and useful. Count me in:)

I’ll probably start by recording a Genki dialogue by myself every day.

I can do that. Or I could delete that reply, then you would have the first reply and you could ask the mods to make it a wiki for you. Whichever way you prefer.

Thank you. It would be very helpful if you could do it.

For speaking, I will start with shadow reading. My goal is 10 minutes a day.

For writing, my goal is to handwrite at least one sentence a day, and try to incorporate my newly learnt kanji.

As already mentioned, I really need motivation for speaking practice, and I also don’t even nearly do enough writing practice  While my main focus will be writing, I will also try to do at least 35% of the days speaking practice. Let’s see how it goes!

Happy speaking and writing everyone!

Day 1

:cherry_blossom:Home Post :paperclips:

^ I recorded myself reading the dialogue for Genki 1s lesson 1, on page 36… I kind of hate how I soundspecifically when speaking Japanese but I’ll leave this recording here for posterity. Maybe I’ll have improved a bit by the end of the challenge. On that note, does anyone know how long Vocaroo links last? I’m assuming they don’t store recordings forever.
