is there an option or Userscript that sets all due reviews of the day to 3AM, as it is possible on Bunpro?
I don’t mind hourly reviews of the early stages (under 24h review schedule), but I’d like to have all other review items due at the beginning of the day.
I know I could “train” that slowly into each item, but that would still spread them all over the place, since I can’t ensure to do my reviews every day at the same hour.
I’d really love something similar like I can set in Bunpro.
There’s no way to mess with the review schedule, with scripts or otherwise. The only thing you could do is hide the pending reviews until a given time.
It is 8PM and I will have 3 items come up for review each and every hour until then. I have decided that I will do my next review session at 8AM. I go about life during that time.
At 8AM when I want to do my review session, there 36 items to review.
A new feature is added to push all arriving items into the review queue to 8AM.
At 8AM when I want to do my review session, there 36 items to review. Exact same end result. The impact on the next time each will come due for review is not altered. I am not being penalized in any way for not doing reviews exactly when they come up. No benefit is realized.
Actually, there is one (admittedly, small) problem:
Say you do lessons and A1 review at 7AM in the morning then A2 review at 11AM. If you want to leave everything else until next morning, you’ll miss the A3 review at 7PM - if you wanted to do that one on schedule, you’d also be thrown in all the other afternoon reviews from previous days.
Workaround? Use self-study quiz to do an extra review session for those A3 items at 7PM - a little extra practice never hurt anyone anyway
However as @KUROKAT_art mentioned, Bunpro already has a built-in solution for this:
It’ll push everything except the A3 reviews to 3AM next day, leaving A3 on the current day’s schedule at 7PM.
What’s more, if you fail a review of a later stage item and it gets kicked back to A3/A2/A1, it’ll be treated as such and not be put in the 3AM queue if it’s meant to be reviewed within a shorter period.
There are penalties:
I can’t do new lessons today, because I have to wait until 11PM until I can do the last necessary review for some kanji to unlock their vocab. But I’m already in bed at that time + wouldn’t be able to learn the new unlocked vocab. Additionally, every item will get a delay of a whole day for every time I can’t do the review at a certain hour and therefore shift it farther and farther.
So my penalty is not being able to learn new stuff here + delaying the review schedule for several days over the whole SRS level journey = both combined delaying the “getting WaniKani done” (which is kinda relevant if you have several SRS and want to finish them asap while still entertaining all other responsibilities in your life) + psychologically not having done all reviews that were due today.
All that might be irrelevant for you, but not for me and several other people.
But I understand that this is not possible on WaniKani. Which is a bit frustrating. But well, it is what it is.
Unfortunately, the Self-Study-Quiz is not a workaround, since it doesn’t affect the SRS schedule (luckily!). You get an additional review, sure, but the actual review stays untouched.
Regarding the penalty topic - see my answer to mgrice above. It’s a bit more than what you mentioned.
I agree, I think it would make sense for the review interval to round down to the day once you’re past the early apprentice stages to give the users more flexibility while not penalizing them. And this way you could deal with all long-term reviews at once and only focus on brand new lessons throughout the day.
To get some of this effect I recommend using a reorder script/app to always do low level SRS reviews first. Once you’re done with apprentice stuff you can be free to postpone the rest of the reviews without penalty.
Is what you’re asking for more accurately stated: “If I don’t have any new lessons available (or if I feel like it), can I bypass the 23.X hour /47.X hour SRS period for reviews for A4/G1 so I can get them done sooner”? I don’t see how having to “wait until 11PM” to do a G1 review on a kanji to unlock the vocab is ever going to slow you down more than having to wait until 3AM the next day to do that review to unlock new vocab.
Also, the last review to guru a kanji should never come at 11pm if you never do reviews at 11pm; it should be 47.X hours after you do the review that gets it to A4. (I assume if you finish an item right as the hour turns, it is a 48.0 hour instead, but that’s an edge case). You may well have A3 or lower reviews fall at that time if you pass an A2 review at 3:15pm for example. But the review of the kanji to unlock the vocab, or of any item at A3 or higher as a rule, will be at the same time of day as the last review of that item.
I can’t speak to the psychological weight of not having done all the reviews, that’s an individual thing. That’s where something that hides pending reviews after a certain time of day could work, so you don’t get reminded of having done a late session one day a month ago if you were sick and didn’t do it in the morning.
How am I supposed to do the reviews at the beginning of the day that unlock new vocab, when those reviews are due at 11PM?
My current available lessons are 0. I can’t do new lessons today, unless I wait until 11PM and try to manage reviews and then the freshly unlocked vocab while I’m already too tired and within that one last hour of today.
This is exactly my problem: I have to wait for tomorrow (+ when ever I’m able to do my reviews then) and therefore have a day without being able to learn new vocab + delay of one day for the reviews to bring them to Guru2.
Yeah, that’s my problem - I had to do the last review around 11PM (which is an exception, not the standard time) which then changed its interval to that hour. Therefore, I can’t unlock anything today, because these kanji are due at 11PM today and I don’t want to stay up that late again just to be able to then learn new vocab just to get things going.
It’s not just about that one item, it’s a general delay that happens over the whole WaniKani journey.
If the G1 wouldn’t have locked the 11PM as it’s due time for the chance to become a G2, but instead “start of the day” = start of today, then I would’ve been already able to review them to get them to G2 and already have learned the unlocked vocab by now.
But unfortunately, that’s not possible.
And that’s why I would love to be able to choose when I can do my reviews in a day via already having all reviews for that day available from the beginning of it (e.g. 3AM).
(As it is possible in Anki, Migaku and even Bunpro)
If you always do all reviews (except A1 and A2) in the mornings before new lessons, you’ll constantly unlock new kanji and new vocab just before the next lesson batch
Dunno, it’s working fine for me, with a batch of 11-12-13 lessons every day - I plan for each level to take me two weeks, learning all items in the level.
The overall delay of WK on the whole was of half a day, on the first day when I decided to postpone A3 reviews from 7PM “today” to ~6AM “tomorrow”. Half a day is practically nothing over the total 3 years it’ll take me to finish…
I get that everyone has different daily routine and for some it works fine how WaniKani is, and for others it doesn’t, and they have to deal with it.
I think that wraps everything up, since this discussion shifted away from my initial question that got already answered as not possible.
Nonetheless, I’m thankful for all your answers and elaborating how you handle the review schedules within your given daily routine. Although it doesn’t help me with what I have, it is still always good to know how others handle things.
You’re complaining that you can’t cut a 48 hour SRS period to 28 hours, though. If we’re talking stages where we’re into weeks/months, sure, that 20 hours is much less significant, but here it’s almost cutting it in half.
But then…
If this is truly an exception, you’ve caused maybe four or five vocab words to unlock a day later. Which means, in six months, those words will be burned … one day later. The vocab doesn’t unlock other vocab, so that’s the extent of the delays. If this was the item that would have pushed you into the next level, then that delays all of that … by one day. Which ends up meaning in six months, you’re one day less progressed than you would have otherwise been. And that’s in significant part due to the part of a day where those reviews got pushed back to 11pm in the first place, which is understandable - having a loss of time of most of a day end up having a delay of essentially a day is a natural consequence. I wouldn’t obsess on that and just continue doing your good work!
If you want to ignore the SRS levels or learn at your own pace, there’s always the option to load a WaniKani sync add-on into Anki and run through it all at your own pace.
