Notes: Finally have enough time to snap out of the motions and gather my thoughts on my progress so far. Just as I was celebrating while finally slugging into level 9 (b4 dreading the 100+ lessons that await), my attention was caught by the progress bar. While I finished all the Kanji a 1st grader would’ve learned, I’ve only achieved 0.1% of Kanji that a 9th grader needs to know. As much progress as I thought I’ve made from the beginning, I am very, VERY far from the end… ![]()
Then again, I shouldn’t measure my efforts through my expected outcomes. Recognizing some words and characters in songs, anime, stories, etc. have repeatedly reminded me that this journey is worth it, and the destination will be beyond what I have and will expect.

You’re a lot further along than you think! If you’re using wkstats to measure this, there’s a little ‘open config’ option which lets you use a cumulative sum. By default, wkstats has this turned off which means each column is looking at the kanji learned in that grade only. It’s true that you know a very small percentage of grade 9 kanji at this point. However, if you check the cumulative sum box, wkstats will show you the percentage of kanji a student of that grade is expected to know, including all of the grades that came before it. You actually know 12.78% of the kanji a student in Japan should know by the end of 9th grade. That’s huge! Furthermore, they are some of the most common kanji, so you will see them a lot.
You are making great progress! 頑張って!
すみません!I apologize for the late response, but this was seriously mind-blowing to find out!!
If these stats are accurate, 12.78% is definitely quite far from 0.1% as I previously believed… It’s always awesome to see my progress in a broader perspective. Thank you for the revelation!!!
Nice! I slacked off for about a month and donked up and didn’t activate vacation mode so now I’m clearing my review queue of 600 built up reviews and then i still have all the level 9 stuff to learn.
We’re in the same boat (to some extent lol)!! Then again, there’s no rush though so you can tackle that big ol’ pile of 600 in a week or two and nobody will judge you for it. がんばってね!!
Yeah I’m doing 100 reviews a day. Fortunately most of them are guru+ so they won’t show up immediately but then i have the ones from levels 7 and 8 which are gonna stick around for a bit.
