Hello WaniKani Community! It’s been a really long time. I’ve been away from consistently practicing kanji for over two years now. When I clicked on “vacation mode” after hitting level 32, I never thought it would take me so long to come back to studying. I reset to level 25 about a year later after seeing all the reviews piled up and having forgotten most of the higher-level kanji. But even then, I got overwhelmed… For the sake of my sanity, I have completely reset my account level 1 and I’m treating this as a fresh start as of today.
I’m going to be running the Tokyo Marathon in 2 weeks with my mom and I found the little motivational kick to get back into studying before stepping foot in Japan. I hope I can stay consistent this time around and finally reach my level 60 dream.
I was dreading pushing the reset button lol. But for the sake of my sanity, I had to do it, rather than get overwhelmed with thousands of reviews and hundreds of kanji I’ve totally forgotten. I just did my first batch of radicals on level 1 and I was like PAHHH CHILD’S PLAY!
Yup, same here. I dreaded going back to my pile of reviews. It really is the best choice sometimes. Just be careful this time so you don’t do too much too fast! I have decided to do only 10 lessons per day. It feels so slow, and I know I could do more, but in the long run I think it’s for the best. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and Japan isn’t going anywhere!
That’s what my queue was like… I tried to bust through the reviews, but they just kept piling up and I was just like… nope I can’t do this anymore! lol
A strategic reset is a good idea. I did the same a number of weeks ago and was level 45 at the time. I recently got a new sensei so I thought new sensei, new start with kanji.
Good luck with the Tokyo Marathon. Is this your first? IMO it is pretty extraordinary to be able to run a marathon with your mother. Enjoy the event and the journey.
I was wondering about getting an evening Japanese tutor/sensei for speaking practice. How did you go about getting your sensei?
Also this is my first marathon and I am slightly terrified! lol I ran my first 20 miles this past weekend (I am wiped) which is supposed to be my longest run during training. My mom is a frequent marathoner and she is aiming for the Abbott World - Six Star medal. Tokyo is one of the last races she needs for the medal, so I decided I would run this one with her, since it’s in Japan and it’s probably the only time the both of us will ever be able to travel there together/experience this!
Welcome back and holy crap you’re running in the Tokyo Marathon?! That’s one of my goals. I’m still just running half-marathons. Also, double cool you’re running with your mom. Just awesome. Anyway, glad you’re back to the WaniKani grind lol.
I have never been a runner. My mom dragged my lazy butt up and this is easily the hardest thing I’ve ever committed to… I can’t believe it’s in two weeks
Haha cool. Yeah running is hard if you rush it. Well you might feel pretty dead after it and hurt for a bit. Your mom will smoke it I’m sure. I’m going to run 20 miles this weekend since you mentioned you recently did. 16 miles is my furthest. Take some photos and share them!
I also reset from level 32, initially to 17, and then recently to 1.
From my perspective WK is more useful now that it was when I first started as a beginner. Although I thinks it’s main usefulness then was in training my brain to differentiate kanji, so maybe it’s just different
I also reset back to the beginning from Level 52 after I took a long vacation…when I came back, nothing looked familiar…lol…so I decided to re-start about three months ago.
Best wishes!!
よくできました!I was toast after mile 15 too. Calves started giving in. I took this week off to recover and I’m just going to do smaller runs now until the marathon. I hope I manage to get through it in one piece
