Reading Vol. 17・ゆるキャン△・ Laid-Back Camp 🏕 (Beginner Book Club)

it’s pretty much like all anime guidebooks: they profile the main characters, showcase a lot of the art and design; include interviews with the creators; and, of course, go through the episodes of the anime itself with pictures, screenshots, and additional information. in the case of Yuru Camp, that includes photographs of the actual locations where the girls went camping. overall, the book is about 125 pages.

anime guidebooks are pretty much my favorite otaku thing to collect, much more so than figurines and other swag. in part because they can be difficult to find, with pretty small print runs. i have guidebooks from A Place Further Than The Universe; The Tatami Galaxy; Madoka Magica; Bakemonogatari (which is actually five mini-guidebooks in one); and now Yuru Camp. I also have three guidebooks that focus just on specific characters from the Monogatari Series. i can’t necessarily read a lot of them; but being able to do so is pretty much my Japanese learning goal! :smiley_cat:

ETA: i managed to find the guidebook (or “Fanbook”) for A Place Further Than the Universe at a bookstore in Akihabara last April. which made me so happy, as that’s my favorite anime and this was the store’s last copy. i paid the cover price, which was 2,500 yen. nowadays, if i wanted a copy, i’d have to buy a used copy of it on amazon for . . . 7,126 yen. yikes!

OK. I’m definitely in! I loved the anime and looking forward to reading along with you all.

Thanks to those who mentioned Kinokuniya! I didn’t know such a magical place existed until a couple of days ago. This could be dangerous for my wallet.

can’t buy it online on kindle  tried but it says there are restrictions

I bought the manga on Amazon.co.jp without trouble - what does the error message say? Have you tried with a vpn?

Says to buy the kindle version need to be in japan. Would a VPN solve that? Because if it is like Germany’s amazon then they check via where your card is coming from. But routing my kindle to a vpn sounds like a giant pain. Computer perhaps would be fine but I probably don’t think it is worth it to buy a vpn just to buy this on kindle.

I don’t know if you’re trying to buy straight on the Kindle or on your computer, but you will need to set the region to Japan and have a Japanese postal address set up on the website (can be a fake address). International credit cards seem to be fine though - I’ve been making all my purchases with a French credit card. The VPN isn’t always needed apparently - but if you do get locked out, there are free VPNs you can try, like Tunnelbear.

Did you try following the guide on these forums for buying ebooks from Amazon? That’s how I got set up, and I haven’t had issues yet  :crossed_fingers:

Didnt realize there was a guide. I’ll look it up in the morning thanks. I thought the process would just be me going on to my amazon jp account and buying the book so didnt think I’d have trouble in the first place

I think Amazon’s ebook purchasing troubles are on purpose, because rights etc differ by country :woman_shrugging: :pensive:

Hey everyone, I’ll be joining this a bit early as I’ve already started reading it to get a bit of a headstart because I don’t want to get overwhelmed in the future because I also have college stuff coming up. The manga seems very aesthetically pleasing and I suppose I could also start watching the anime. Does anyone know to which extend the anime covers the manga? I’d prefer to read first, and then watch to avoid seeing something I haven’t read yet in the manga. It probably covers volume 1 right? The first season, that is. Good luck and happy reading to everyone who is starting this manga too! :green_heart:

Apparently the anime covers the first 5 volumes, but also contains original material.

As a rule of thumb, a 12 episode anime general covers 3-4 volumes, for these types of slice of life comedies. Can be more or less of course, but that’s a good assumption if you don’t have better information.

When I went on crunchyroll they only had 6 episodes? Wonder if there’s a second season because it doesnt look like the anime itself has a lot

Are you sure you weren’t looking at “Hanamori Yumiri’s Beginner Solo Camping”? The anime definitely has 12 episodes.

Was definitely watching yuru kyampu

Huh. Well, I have access to 12 episodes on Crunchyroll. It could be a different licence in your country, but I can’t see why they’d have half the series and not the other six episodes. What’s the name of the sixth episode you can see?

The slider only shows to 6 but they have all 12 after clicking on the name

End of volume four, actually. And unless they shuffled chapters around for the English version, it’s… pretty clear-cut, so I’m not too clear on why that person is waffling around. Also not entirely sure what original anime episode they’re referring to. I mean, they added an extra scene at the end of episode twelve which isn’t in the manga, as a way of wrapping things up more nicely, but otherwise it follows the manga pretty closely.

Shucks. Guess I’ll have to watch it over again to be sure.

(Also, that was posted in April 2018, which is longer ago than I would have thought… except in hindsight, I do remember seeing advertising for the anime when I rode the Eizan line in Kyoto, and that was in April 2018. I’ve even got a stamp of Shimarin and Saito.)

I swear the OP has serious Jackson 5 vibes

I was able to buy the first volume on my paperwhite! The guide helped. I just hope the card won’t get a fraud alert because I put in a rando Japanese address xD. Although, I guess it would be worse if I never got anything.

Gonna ask a lot of basic questions when I join the discussion hope that’s okay.
