Reading Murakami Haruki's 1Q84 (Intermediate/Advanced Book)

Hey everyone, just wanted to check in and let you know that I have Book 1 前編 and am planning to start it on November 14 (tentatively). I will try to follow a 6 week schedule - 2 chapters a week, finishing about a week before Christmas.

If anyone is interested in reading along with me, let me know! I will probably be taking a look at the original discussion threads as I read and leaving some thoughts if I have any interesting ones.

I’m nearly done with the first part of book 1! Unfortunately won’t be able to discuss much since I rarely have internet these days. But I’m really enjoying it so far!

My pace has been slower than I had hoped due to lack of time and a lot of tricky vocabulary, but it’s been so cool enjoying Murakami in the original language for the first time. Are you still planning on starting next week? I imagine you’ll catch up fairly quickly.

Yes, I’m planning on starting next week. Just trying to catch up with my other reading first.

I only have a few chapters left in Book 1 前編.
Are we still planning on starting Book 1 後編 in January? :eyes:

I was actually wondering about that the other day
How fast are you planning to read? One chapter per week? That would be pretty much doable, I guess. Faster than that might be an issue for me. (Or we just start together and read at different speeds? Would be an option as well.)

Is there anybody else reading with you atm, and planning to continue into Book 1下? Or planning to join anyways without reading right now?

There are 12 chapters and they’re pretty short, so reading one chapter a week would mean stretching the book out over three months. Plus, we would only see 青豆 or 天吾 once every other week.

We should find out who else will be reading with us and what speed they want to read at. If we end up deciding on one chapter a week, that would be fine too. I might just read a bit ahead.

Yes, I know… it’s just that there is still some Eugenia and one other book, and we are planning to read 半落ち in Jan and Feb, and it’s said to be pretty hard, so either I can manage and it will take quite some time plus the other books so I thought I’d play it safe . Or I can’t manage, and then I’m fine with 2 chapters a week

Also, I read the book already in German a few years ago, and so I’m happy to discuss with you whenever whatever (might need a quick refresher on the details but otherwise I know everything already). So even if you read faster than me, we can still discuss things if you like.

So who else is planning on reading Book 1 後編 with us in January? @jhol (who usually doesn’t have internet)?

@morteASD @Cathm2 @Kappa421 were also interested in reading this at some point, but I don’t know if this is still true or whether they read the first part of Book 1 already?

I haven’t read the first book yet, and I’m currently quite over committed with my reading. Plus the books are in Australia and I’m currently not!

But thanks for the call out!

Interested! I’ve read Book 1 in English so I could theoretically start anywhere.

Although I’m a bit swamped with my to-read books… After my current book (葉桜の季節に君を思うということ) I’ve kind of promised to borrow Murakamis 色彩を持たない多崎つくると、彼の巡礼の年 from an acquaintance and read it. It’s her favourite . So I probably can’t start with you, but I’ll look if I can catch-up at some point!

Oh, I heard good things about that one too! So many books, so little time

Yes please do! :muscle:

Haha I completely forgot about this and missed the thread so no, I haven’t read part 1 at all.

Seems like it might be hard to organize a “book club” reading of 1Q84 starting from the 2nd of 6 volumes. That is understandable. But now that I’m started, it would be too late to stop now! I’ll probably just continue on with Book 1 後編 in January and post in the old discussion threads if I get the urge.

@NicoleIsEnough, let me know if this ends up fitting into your reading schedule, but no need to force it if it doesn’t. It doesn’t seem necessary to set up a book club schedule for just two people anyway.

Yes I can totally see that :joy_cat: When I read it in German, I just couldn’t put it down.

I was thinking of doing this informally anyway. Or do you mean you just want to read as fast as you like, even more than 2 chapters a week?

When are you planning to start? I“ll see what I can do to keep up with you, like I promised :+1:

Great! Well, informally speaking, I was planning of taking a brief break between volumes and hopefully getting through Chapter 4 by the end of January. Does that work for you? Not sure of the exact date I will be starting because I need to get out and buy the second volume. And catch up on my other reading.

EDIT: Since the chapter numbering continues between the 前編 and 後編, make that Chapter 16 by the end of January.

Yes, that sounds excellent! That way I can take it a bit easier and read 1 chapter per week in January, and after that Eugenia is over and I know more about 半落ち and can give a better estimate going forward.

Just finished chapter 15, so I’m positive I can read the last remaining chapter until the end of this month. How about you @Jfredel78 - are you on track or did something get in the way?

Saikawa and Moe got in the way. :joy:

I want to continue my goal of finishing one book each month, so I am trying to finish 封印再度 before moving on to 1Q84. I have less than 100 pages left though, and I still plan to read at least two chapters a week in 1Q84. I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Haha I see

All right, no worries! I will slowly proceed with 1Q84 so you can overtake me with full steam once you got our hobby detectives sorted :+1:
