For 毎年 the reading shows まいとし and will only accept this answer. However, the voice example clearly says まいねん plus the internet tells me that まいねん is the more common pronounciation for this. I’m tired of being penalized for (correctly) answering this kanji. Anyone else have this issue? I’m on iOS tsurukame btw

This Yahoo thread has various natives say that they’re interchangeable, although some say that まいとし is more common and/or more casual (which would make sense to me, since generally jukugo words tend to be more formal/technical when a kun counterpart exists):
At any rate, I don’t think either should be considered wrong.
It’s annoying because there are a bunch of these doublets which have various nuances and are more or less common (今日・きょう・こんにち、今年・ことし・こんねん、明日・あした・みょうにち、…)

Both the samples on the WK vocab page for 毎年 say まいとし – is there another one lurking somewhere else?
(No opinion on whether both readings should be accepted.)
Oh, I found a thread from 2024 that says that the WK audio is right, that the WK app will give a warning for the reading it doesn’t like, not mark it as wrong, and that this is a bug specific to Tsurukame.

まいとし is the typical way to pronounce it.
Regardless of the typical way to pronounce it, it is frustrating for memorization sake that I must type まいとし but then hear “まいねん” because the voice is what gets stuck in my head. Oh well, no one ever said learning a new language should be easy. Thank you all for the replies!
As stated above by another user, the sound samples are まいとし. There is no まいねん
If you are hearing まいねん you must either have some script giving you a separate audio source or just having severe mishearing problems

Just to confirm:
- As others have said, we don’t have まいねん as an audio recording. Tsurukame might, but WaniKani does not!
- On WaniKani, まいねん will give a grey shake essentially asking for the まいとし reading, but it won’t mark the answer as incorrect.
